Ålesund is the most beautiful city in Norway — a fishing port of 67,000 on a cluster of islands at the mouth of the Storfjorden, rebuilt entirely in Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil) after the great fire of January 23, 1904 destroyed almost the entire city in a single night. Kaiser Wilhelm II sent four ships with emergency supplies the next morning, and Germany’s finest Art Nouveau architects rebuilt Ålesund in 1904–1907 — producing the finest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture anywhere in the world outside Brussels.

Geirangerfjord (the 15km-long UNESCO fjord (2005); the most visited fjord in Norway; the Seven Sisters (the finest waterfall cluster in Norway; 7 waterfalls falling simultaneously from the 800m cliff above the fjord); accessible by ferry (2.5h; from 400 kr) or the Golden Route via Trollstigen (the finest road in Norway; the finest series of hairpin bends in Europe)) and Aksla (the 418m viewpoint directly above Ålesund; the finest panoramic view of the Art Nouveau rooflines and the island-city from above; free; 418 steps) are the two essential Ålesund experiences.

The Lyspunktet restaurant (the Brosundet canal; the finest Ålesund fine-dining; 400–700 NOK pp) and the Invit restaurant (the Art Nouveau building; 350–600 NOK) are the two most consistently recommended Ålesund dinner options.
