Flores has a compact but excellent restaurant scene on the island’s southern lakeside strip. El Terrazzo (the finest restaurant in Flores; the lakeside terrace; USD 12–25; fresh Petén fish, Guatemalan stews, and the finest lake view dining in Guatemala) and Las Puertas (the most popular bar and restaurant; the courtyard; the traveller gathering point; USD 8–15) are the two essential dining experiences. The comedores near the market in Santa Elena (the mainland; GTQ 25–40 for a full almuerzo; the most authentic Guatemalan market food in the Petén; the stewed black beans, handmade tortillas, and local fish) are the budget option. Flores island (colourful lakeside houses; restaurant strip on the water; pleasant to walk around in 10 minutes) is significantly more pleasant than Santa Elena’s budget accommodation on the mainland.
The Flores to Tikal minibus (GTQ 40–60; the Santa Elena market departure point; minibuses from 6am; 1h to Tikal) should be booked the day before through your hotel or any Flores agency.
Kayak rental from the Flores island dock (GTQ 50–80/h; the western lake; the sunset from water level; the island facades visible behind) at 5pm is the finest 1-hour activity in Flores.
Flores to San Ignacio, Belize by bus (USD 30; 4 hours; book through any Flores travel agent; departs 5–7am; crosses at Benque Viejo) is the most practical overland Central America connection.
The Petén lowlands stay 30–35°C year-round with high humidity. Explore Tikal before 10am and after 3pm. Rest during 11am–2pm when heat is genuinely dangerous for sustained walking.
The Flores FRS to Guatemala City GUA domestic flight (Avianca Guatemala; 45 mins; USD 80–160 return; 2 daily; book 2–3 weeks ahead for the cheapest fares) is the only rational choice for itineraries under 2 weeks.
Arrive Flores by afternoon flight (FRS; 45 mins from GUA). Check into island hotel. Perimeter walk (20 mins; free; all lakeside). Kayak rental (5pm; GTQ 60; 1h; the sunset from the western lake point). El Terrazzo dinner (USD 15–20; the lakeside terrace; reserve 1h ahead; the Petén fish). Beer at Las Puertas (GTQ 20; the traveller courtyard; 9pm). Early sleep for 6am Tikal departure.
6am: minibus to Tikal (GTQ 50; 1h; arrive 7am; USD 20 entry; Gran Plaza; Temple IV; Lost World; wildlife walk; 6h site total). Return minibus 2pm. Swim at Flores causeway (1h; the lake at 27°C). Optional: Yaxhé evening (combine on the Tikal day; the ruins + lagoon sunset USD 10 extra). Flores dinner. Airport hotel or overnight for AM departure.
