The North Sea Jazz Festival (annually in July; Rotterdam Ahoy; the largest indoor jazz festival in the world; 65,000 visitors over 3 days; 1,000+ musicians in 15 venues) fills every hotel and restaurant in the city — book 3 months ahead for accommodation in July.
The RET metro (the most extensive underground system in the Netherlands; lines A through E; the Centraal station is the hub for all lines; OV-chipkaart or €4 day ticket) is the fastest way across the city. Trams 4 and 7 cover the central cultural district. The water taxi (the red speedboats that cross the Maas in 2 minutes; €5/person; the fastest and most enjoyable way to reach the Kop van Zuid from the north bank) is a practical transport option between the Hotel New York and the city centre. The waterbus to Kinderdijk (for the windmills; 30 min from the Erasmusplein stop; €4.50 each way) runs daily April–October.
May–Sep is the best season: 18–23°C, the port and waterfront at their finest. Rotterdam Architecture Month (May) and the North Sea Jazz Festival (July) are the standout events. Nov–Mar is cold (2–8°C) but excellent for indoor architecture and the Markthal.
Rotterdam is marginally cheaper than Amsterdam for accommodation and food but broadly similar for museums and activities. The North Sea Jazz Festival (July) causes hotel price spikes. Per person per day.
The Markthal (free entry; food stalls from €3) and the Kinderdijk waterbus (€4.50) are both excellent value. Rotterdam is consistently 10–15% cheaper than Amsterdam for accommodation on equivalent dates.
The Hotel New York (Kop van Zuid; the former Holland America emigrant ship HQ; a 4-star hotel in the original 1901 building with Art Nouveau interiors and the best waterfront location in Rotterdam) is the most atmospheric mid-range hotel in the city.
The FG Restaurant (Katshoek 37; François Geurds; 2 Michelin stars; the most celebrated restaurant in Rotterdam; contemporary Dutch tasting menu with wine pairing; book months ahead) is the finest dining address in the city.

The Architecture Centrum (BNASR; Wilhelminakade 316; free entry; map €2.50) has a marked walking route past the Cube Houses, Markthal, De Rotterdam, and Central Station. Allow 3 hours.
Kinderdijk (UNESCO; 30 min by waterbus from Rotterdam; €12.50) has 19 functioning 18th-century windmills. Weekday mornings before 10am have almost no visitors — weekends are packed.
North Sea Jazz Festival (late July; Ahoy; from €85/day) is one of the world’s finest, with 1,000+ artists across 14 stages. Day tickets sell out months in advance.
Rotterdam’s Surinamese community produces the finest roti and pom in the Netherlands. Warung Mini (Hoogstraat 2) and Roti Toko Stara (Teilingerstraat 167) are the two definitive addresses.
Hotel New York (Koninginnenhoofd 1; the former Holland America Line terminal) serves seafood on the Maas with Erasmus Bridge views. The 1901 ocean-liner Art Nouveau interior is extraordinary.
The Boijmans Van Beuningen Depot (Museumpark 24; €20; book online) is the world’s first publicly accessible art storage building. The mirrored roof gives a 360° panorama — book a week ahead.
