Delft is the most perfectly preserved Golden Age Dutch town in existence: 100,000 people in a city whose historic centre — the canal ring, the market square, the Gothic churches, the almshouses and the breweries — is essentially unchanged from the 17th century, when the city was home to Johannes Vermeer (born here 1632, died here 1675; all but three of his 34 surviving paintings were made in Delft) and was the centre of Delftware pottery production (the tin-glazed earthenware in blue and white that Dutch potters developed by studying Chinese porcelain arriving from the VOC trade and has been made here continuously since 1653). The two defining Dutch cultural contributions — the greatest interior painter in European art and the ceramic tradition that became the most recognisable Dutch decorative product in the world — are both from Delft.

Delft is also the city where William of Orange was assassinated on 10 July 1584 by Balthasar Gerard’s two pistol shots, fired in the hallway of the Prinsenhof building. The bullet holes in the wall are still there. The combination of Vermeer, Delftware, William of Orange and the perfectly intact 17th-century townscape makes Delft the most historically concentrated small city in the Netherlands.

Market Square (Markt) & the Two Churches

The Markt (the central market square; 100m × 100m; free; Thursday market 9am–5pm year-round) is flanked by the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church; €5; the royal burial church; William of Orange buried 1584; tower climb 376 steps for the finest Delft view) and the Oude Kerk (Old Church; €5; the most beautiful medieval interior in Delft; the tower leans 2 degrees on peat subsoil; Vermeer buried here). The Stadhuis (Neo-Renaissance town hall on the west side; finest civic building in Delft) completes the square.

💡 The Markt (free; the finest market square in the Netherlands; the New Church/Nieuwe Kerk and the Old Church/Oude Kerk at opposite ends) is best on Thursdays (market day; 9am–5pm; free to browse). The Nieuwe Kerk tower (€4.50; 376 steps; finest view of Delft) has the Royal Crypt of the House of Orange-Nassau below — the burial place of Dutch royalty since 1584.

Royal Delft (Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles)

Royal Delft (Rotterdamseweg 196; €16; daily 9am–5pm; book at royaldelft.com; 2h minimum) is the only remaining authentic Delftware factory from the original 17th-century Delft pottery industry: established 1653 as De Porceleyne Fles, the sole survivor of the original 32 Delft faience factories. The tour shows the complete hand-painting process: design transfer, cobalt blue oxide painting by hand (each painter with their own identifiable style), tin glaze and kiln firing. The museum section displays the full Delftware history from the 1650s VOC-era Chinese porcelain imitation to the present royal commissions.

💡 Royal Delft (Rotterdamseweg 196; €17.50; royaldelft.com; open Mon–Sun 9am–5pm) is the only remaining original Delft pottery factory from the 17th century. The museum shows the entire production process and the finest historical collection of Delftware. The factory shop sells genuine Royal Delft (marked with the pottery mark and the letter D) at higher prices than tourist shops but with authenticity.

Prinsenhof Museum & the Assassination Site

The Prinsenhof (Sint Agathaplein 1; €12.50; Tue–Sun 10am–5pm) is the former convent and later residence of William of Orange, where he was assassinated on 10 July 1584. The two bullet holes fired by Balthasar Gerard are still visible in the staircase wall (behind glass; forensically authenticated). The museum covers the Dutch Revolt against Spain (1568–1648; the Eighty Years War; the founding of the Dutch Republic) and the full life of William of Orange. The inner courtyard (free to enter) contains the original medieval cloister.

💡 The Prinsenhof Museum (€15; prinsenhof-delft.nl; closed Mon) occupies the former royal palace where William of Orange was assassinated in 1584 — the bullet holes in the staircase wall are still visible (behind glass). The finest painting in the collection is Michiel van Mierevelt’s portrait of William I.

Delft Canal Network

The Delft canal network (dug 13th–17th century; entirely intact; the most perfectly preserved small-city canal network in the Netherlands) is best explored on foot or by rented canoe (€10/h from Kanoverhuur Delft, Wijnhaven; April–October). The Oude Delft canal (the oldest; lined with 17th-century canal houses; the most photographed), the Koornmarkt (grain market canal; finest row of Golden Age facades; the Nieuwe Kerk tower reflection at dusk) and the Voldersgracht (the quietest, most local-feeling) are the three finest stretches.

💡 The Delft canal network (free; 40km of canals within the city; rental bikes from Rent A Bike Delft; €10/day) is best explored by bike — the compact city covers all major sights in a 3km circuit. The Oostpoort (East Gate; 1400 AD; free; the only remaining medieval city gate) and the Beestenmarkt square (free; the café square) are the two best free discoveries.

Eating & Drinking

Delft’s food scene is anchored by the 25,000 students of Delft University of Technology and a prosperous professional class. The Beestenmarkt (the former cattle market square one block from the Markt; now the finest terrace square in Delft) has the best concentration of outdoor bars. Specific addresses: Stads-koffyhuis (Oude Delft 133; the oldest cafe in Delft; Dutch pancakes; jenever), Eetcafe de Zwarte Ruiter (Markt 120; best terrace on the Markt; the broodje kroket), and Restaurant Raedthuys (Markt 38; the most reliable traditional Dutch kitchen; hutspot and stamppot). The Thursday Markt (year-round; fresh stroopwafels, raw herring, Old Amsterdam cheese) is the finest weekly food experience in the city.

The Delft craft beer culture (Delftse Hout — the beer garden in the woods east of the centre, open daily in summer) and the brown cafes on the Beestenmarkt terraces are the two most specifically Delft drinking experiences.

Getting Around

Delft’s historic centre is entirely walkable: from the station (10 min walk along the Wijnhaven canal) to the Markt is 1km; from the Markt to the Royal Delft factory is 1.2km south (15 min walk or €6 Uber). Train connections make Delft an ideal base: The Hague is 10 min (€3.20) and Rotterdam is 20 min (€3.80). Bicycle rental from the station (€10–12/day) is the most pleasant way to reach the Royal Delft factory and the Delftse Hout park.

Best Time to Visit Delft

Apr–Oct is the best time (14–22°C). The Thursday Markt runs year-round. Arrive early weekdays in summer to avoid the Amsterdam day-trip crowds. The Royal Delft factory is open year-round; book online.

Travel Tips

🎨

Royal Delft: book the 9am slot

Koninklijke Delft (Rotterdamseweg 196; €17.50; first entry 9am; book online) is the only remaining original Delft Blue pottery maker. The 9am slot gives a quieter factory floor and better workshop light.

📷

Vermeer: find the View of Delft viewpoint

Vermeer’s View of Delft (now in the Mauritshuis, The Hague) was painted from the north bank of the Schie.

🏲

Nieuwe Kerk tower: the finest view in South Holland

The Nieuwe Kerk tower (Markt; €5; summer only; 376 steps; no lift) gives a 360° view over Delft’s canals and, on clear days, Rotterdam’s skyline 13km south. Worth the climb.

🍽

Beestenmarkt terrace: the finest outdoor square in Delft

The Beestenmarkt (Delft’s finest terrace square; no car traffic) is best on a sunny Thursday or Saturday morning when the local market runs and the café tables fill from 10am.

📷

Arrive early on weekdays to beat the tour groups

Day-trippers arrive from Amsterdam by 11am on weekends. A Tuesday or Wednesday visit before 10am gives Delft’s canal streets and the Markt almost entirely to yourself.

🌳

Rent a canoe on the Wijnhaven

Wijnhaven canal rentals (€12/hour; pedal boats and canoes; May–September) offer the most photogenic Delft perspective — looking up at the canal houses from the waterline rather than down from the bridges.
