Pokhara is Nepal’s second city and its most beautiful — a lake-and-mountain town where Phewa Lake’s perfect reflection of the Annapurna massif greets you from every waterfront guesthouse and where the world’s most popular Himalaya trekking routes begin at the edge of the city. The Annapurna range (eight peaks above 7,000m including Annapurna I at 8,091m, the tenth-highest mountain on earth) hangs above the valley so close that it seems implausible from any map.

Pokhara is a significantly calmer and more relaxed destination than Kathmandu — a lakeside resort town with excellent cafes, kayaking, paragliding, and the atmosphere of a high-altitude beach resort where the mountains happen to be 8,000-metre peaks. Most trekkers spend 1–2 days here before and after the Annapurna or Poon Hill routes.

Top Sights in Pokhara

Phewa Lake & the Annapurna Reflection

Phewa Lake & the Annapurna Reflection

Phewa Lake (Phewa Tal; the second-largest lake in Nepal; free; 2km wide; 4km long; kayaks and rowboats for rent at NPR 200–400/hour from the Lakeside waterfront) provides the most photographed view in Nepal: the Annapurna massif reflected in the still morning water. The reflection is best at dawn (6–7am) when the water is calm and the early light turns the snow peaks orange and pink.

💡 Row or kayak to the small Tal Barahi temple on the lake island (10 mins; NPR 200 for the boat) in the morning for the finest unobstructed reflection view. The Lakeside restaurants and cafes (all with waterfront terraces) have the reflection continuously visible from breakfast through dinner; the finest single breakfast view in Nepal is from any Lakeside terrace on a clear October morning.

Sarangkot Sunrise Viewpoint

Sarangkot Sunrise Viewpoint

Sarangkot (1,600m; 6km from Pokhara Lakeside; taxi NPR 800–1,200 one-way; or 1.5h on foot via the Bindyabasini temple trail) is the finest Annapurna viewpoint accessible without a multi-day trek — a ridge above Pokhara with a 270-degree panorama of the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges (Dhaulagiri at 8,167m is the seventh-highest mountain on earth). The sunrise here (Annapurna I, Machhapuchhare and the entire massif turning gold in the first light) is the most accessible Himalaya sunrise experience in Nepal.

💡 Take a taxi from Lakeside at 5am (1h; NPR 800–1,000 one-way; confirm the price before departure; negotiate for a return pickup at 8am). The Sarangkot viewpoint can be extremely cold before dawn (bring a down jacket even in October); the sunrise itself takes 20–30 minutes from first light to full morning. Paragliding launches from Sarangkot ridge daily from 7am.

Paragliding over the Annapurna Range

Paragliding over the Annapurna Range

Paragliding from Sarangkot (NPR 6,000–8,000/person for a 30-minute tandem flight with a licensed pilot; launch from Sarangkot ridge at 1,600m; land on Phewa Lake’s Lakeside beach; daily from 7am in good weather) is the finest single activity in Pokhara — a half-hour flight over the lake with the full Annapurna range visible ahead and Pokhara city below. Pokhara’s geography (the Phewa Lake bowl, the ridge, the thermal updrafts) makes it one of the finest paragliding sites in Asia.

💡 Book paragliding through any Lakeside paragliding company (dozens operate; compare prices; all pilots are licensed; the flight experience is identical across companies; NPR 6,000–8,000 is the standard 2025 price). Go on a clear morning (October–November have the most consistent clear-sky days). The GoPro video of the Annapurna panorama from the air is the finest single Nepal souvenir image possible.

International Mountain Museum

International Mountain Museum

The International Mountain Museum (Museum Road, Pokhara; NPR 500; 9am–5pm Tue–Sun) is the finest mountaineering museum in Asia — covering the history of Himalayan exploration from the first survey expeditions of the 18th century through the 1953 Everest first ascent to modern extreme alpinism. Exhibits include original equipment from Everest expeditions (Hillary’s boots, oxygen apparatus from the 1953 expedition), scale models of all 14 eight-thousanders, and a gallery of the 14 peaks with first ascent history and first ascentionists’ portraits.

💡 Allow 2h for the museum — the scale models of the eight-thousanders (showing the climbing routes, camps, and technical difficulties) are the finest geographical education on Himalayan climbing available anywhere. The museum is also the most comfortable air-conditioned space in Pokhara — a useful midday refuge during the heat of summer or the monsoon.

Eating & Drinking

Pokhara Lakeside has the most international and relaxed restaurant scene in Nepal outside Thamel. The essential experiences: Dal Bhat at any Lakeside local restaurant (NPR 300–400; unlimited refills; always fresh and safe; the genuine Nepali meal that every trekker will eat daily on the trail). Momos (steamed dumplings; NPR 150–200; the Lakeside street momos are among the finest in Nepal — try the buff momo with tomato chutney from any street cart). The Busy Bee Cafe (Lakeside; the longest-operating cafe-bar in Pokhara; live music evenings; the most social evening venue) and Moondance Restaurant (lakefront terrace; good coffee and meals; NPR 400–800) are the two consistently reliable Lakeside options. Fresh apple pie (Pokhara grows apples in the surrounding hills; available at every bakery from September; NPR 100–200 per slice) is the Pokhara-specific food experience.
