Antalya is a city with two personalities: a modern, crowded Mediterranean resort of three million, and a Roman old town of the finest quality. Walk through Hadrian’s Gate — carved for the emperor’s visit in 130 AD — and the marble-paved lanes, Ottoman timber houses, and Roman harbour of Kaléiçi feel genuinely preserved rather than restored. The same city is also the base for the greatest concentration of Roman ruins in the world, radiating outward within two hours: Perge, Aspendos, Side, Termessos.

The Aspendos Theatre, 45km east, is the finest surviving Roman theatre anywhere — 15,500 seats, the stage building almost entirely intact, and still used for performances each summer. The Antalya Archaeological Museum holds the statues excavated from Perge, which fill an entire hall and represent the finest Roman sculpture collection in Turkey. Konyaaltı Beach, 7km of pebbles below the Taurus Mountains, is the city’s own.

Kaleici & the Roman Harbour

Kaléiçi is the finest surviving Roman-Byzantine-Ottoman walled quarter on the Turkish coast — a maze of marble lanes, Ottoman wooden houses, and ancient walls falling to a marina. Hadrian’s Gate, built in 130 AD, is the finest Roman triumphal arch in Turkey.

💡 Kaléiçi is best at 7am when the Roman harbour is empty and the cats have the marble alleys to themselves. Hadrian’s Gate at dawn is the finest free monument on the Turkish Riviera.

Aspendos Theatre

Aspendos is the finest surviving Roman theatre in the world — 15,500 seats, a near-intact stage building, and acoustics so good a whisper carries from the stage. Built in 155 AD, it still hosts opera and ballet in summer. The drive east takes 45 minutes.

Konyaalti Beach & the Taurus Backdrop

Konyaaltı is a 7km pebble beach directly below the Taurus Mountains — one of the finest dramatic backdrops of any beach on the Turkish coast. The Lower Düden waterfall, 12km east, is the only waterfall in Turkey that falls directly into the sea.

💡 The Lower Düden waterfall is the only one in Turkey that falls directly into the sea. The cliff-top view is free; the boat trip from the water is the finer angle.

Perge Archaeological Site

Perge’s 120-metre colonnaded main street rivals Ephesus in preservation but receives a fraction of its visitors. The Antalya Archaeological Museum holds the finest Roman sculpture collection in Turkey — the entire hall devoted to statues from Perge is the finest room in the museum.

Eating & Drinking

Antalya’s food culture reflects its position at the junction of the Mediterranean, the Ottoman interior and the rich agricultural hinterland of the Taurus Mountains: the Antalya piyaz (the traditional Antalya salad of white beans, tahini, egg, onion, sumac and parsley — the most specifically Antalya dish; available at the Kaleici restaurants; the correct order with any grilled meat or fish), the fresh Mediterranean fish (the sea bream and sea bass from the Gulf of Antalya; the octopus; the grilled kofte of the harbor restaurants; ₺300–600 for a full fish dinner with raki in Kaleici), and the Antalya fruit and vegetable market (the Kaleici street market on Fridays; the citrus fruit of the Antalya coastal plain; the enormous strawberries in May; the pomegranates in autumn). The meyhane on Kaleici’s harbour square (the fish meze; the raki; the live music on the terrace in summer) is the finest evening in Antalya. Specific addresses: Vanilla Restaurant (Hesapci Sokak, Kaleici; the finest contemporary Mediterranean menu in Antalya; ₺400–800), the Parlak Restaurant (the piyaz specialists since 1950; the most local lunch address in Antalya; ₺150–300).

Getting Around

Antalya is a large city and the main attractions are dispersed: the Kaleici (central), the Antalya Museum (3km west; AntRay tram or taxi), the Konyaalti Beach (3km west; the tram or 30-min walk from Kaleici), and the ruins (15–80km east and west; requiring a car or the minibus). The AntRay tram (Line 1; Otogar–Kaleici–Muze–Konyaalti; ₺15; the most practical city transit) covers the museum and the western beach. A rental car (from the airport or from the city Sixt/Hertz offices; ₺500–1,500/day) is the most practical for the Perge + Aspendos + Side ruins circuit (100km round trip; achievable in a single full day with an early start). Taxis from the centre are metered; insist on the meter.

Day 1
Kaleici Old Town, Museum & Duden Falls

Kaléiçi walk at dawn: Hadrian’s Gate, the Yivli Minaret, the Roman harbour at sunrise. Antalya Museum for the Perge sculpture hall. Lower Düden Waterfall at sunset over the sea cliff.
