The Daugavpils Fortress (Daugavpils Cietoksnis; built 1810–1878; a full Russian Imperial military fortification with four bastions, moat, gates, and over 70 buildings; 150 hectares; free to walk; the fortress area is now a partially restored creative district with the Rothko Centre, studios, and cultural venues) is the most significant piece of military architecture in Latvia. The four surviving bastions and the main parade ground (the Russian military layout still clearly legible; the original brick buildings in varying states of restoration) make for an extraordinary walk.
💡 Walk the Daugavpils Fortress free of charge (the gates are open daily; the main parade ground is a 10-minute walk from the Rothko Centre entrance; the south gate and the Daugava River view from the northern bastion are the two finest viewpoints). The former officers’ houses (brick; Russian Empire architecture; now studios and cultural spaces) and the small Fortress Museum (€3; the military history of the fortification) complete the experience.
The Daugavpils city centre (Viēnības laukums — Unity Square; the main civic square; the town hall, the St Mary’s Roman Catholic Basilica — the largest Catholic basilica in Latvia; free; open daily — and the surrounding 19th-century Russian imperial streetscape) reflects the city’s Tsarist origins and its cultural distance from the Protestant, German-influenced Latvian north. The Old Believers’ Grebenshchikov Church (one of the finest Russian Orthodox churches in Latvia; 18th century; the Old Believers’ community in Daugavpils is one of the most significant in the Baltic States) is 5 minutes from the main square.

The Old Believers’ church (Russian Orthodox; the community has maintained continuous practice from the 18th century; respectful visitors welcome; head covering for women) provides the most distinctive religious architecture encounter in the Baltics.
The Daugavpils area is the gateway to the Latgale Lake District — the most lake-dense region in Latvia (over 860 lakes in Latgale; the largest concentration in the country). Lake Dubnas (adjacent to Daugavpils; the city’s swimming and recreation lake; free; the finest freshwater beach in eastern Latvia) and Rāznas National Park (40km from Daugavpils; Rāzna Lake — the second-largest lake in Latvia; hiking trails; the finest Latgale landscape) are the natural attractions within day-trip range.

Daugavpils’s food scene reflects its Russian-speaking majority. Restaurant Gubernators (the finest restaurant in Daugavpils; Latvian and Russian cuisine; €15–30 for a full dinner; in the city centre) and the Hotel Latgola restaurant are the two main formal dining options. The city’s markets (the Central Market; Latvian and Russian market food at the lowest prices in Latvia; pelmeni, borscht, and the Latgale specialty grey peas with smoked meat at €3–6 for a full bowl) are the most culturally distinctive food experiences. The Rothko Centre cafe (in the fortress; the finest coffee in Daugavpils; open during museum hours; €3–5) is the essential pre-gallery stop.
