Where the Wind Is Born
The Liepāja beach (north of the city; the finest open Baltic beach in Latvia; 3km of wide white sand; free; the most consistent sea breeze of any Latvian beach — the city motto is justified; water temperatures 18–22°C in July–August) is the primary attraction for summer visitors. Unlike the sheltered Jūrmala Gulf beach, Liepāja faces the open Baltic — the waves are stronger, the wind is constant, and the experience is significantly more dramatic.
💡 The Liepāja beach is at its finest in the afternoon (2–6pm; the sea breeze keeps the temperature pleasant even in the July heat; the waves are suitable for bodyboarding; the beach is widest at low tide; the sunset at the northern end of the beach — the lighthouse visible in the distance — is the finest coastal sunset in western Latvia). Bring a windbreaker even in July — the open Baltic breeze is constant and cooling.
Karosta (the Kara osta — military port; 5km north of Liepāja centre; accessible by bus 7 from the city centre; free to walk the streets; the largest Soviet military port construction in the Baltic States; the Northern Forts, the imposing St Nicholas Naval Cathedral, and the Karosta Prison are the main sights) is the most extraordinary piece of Soviet military urbanism in Latvia — a complete city-within-a-city built for the Soviet Baltic Fleet that is now semi-abandoned, partially accessible, and unlike anything else in the country.
💡 The Karosta Prison (formerly the Tsarist and Soviet military prison; guided tours €5; the most popular attraction in Karosta; the original cell blocks, interrogation rooms, and courtyard intact; ghost tours at night from €10) is the most visited Karosta sight. The St Nicholas Naval Cathedral (the largest Orthodox church in Latvia; Russian Empire architecture; 1903; now partially restored as a museum) is the most impressive building. The Northern Forts (the coastal fortification line; partially accessible; rust, Soviet concrete, and Baltic Sea views) is the most atmospheric walk.
St Anne’s Basilica (Svr. Annas baznīca; Ziņu iela 4; free; open daily 10am–6pm; built 1697–1703; the finest Lutheran cathedral in Latvia; the 17th-century organ — originally the largest pipe organ in the world in 1779; still functioning; one of the most significant surviving baroque organs in Northern Europe; €3 additional for an organ demonstration) is the architectural highlight of Liepāja’s city centre. The Gothic brick interior (the baroque organ in the west loft; the 18th-century wooden pulpit and altar) represents the finest piece of Lutheran ecclesiastical art in Latvia.
💡 Visit St Anne’s Basilica in the morning (10am–noon; the east-facing windows illuminate the nave directly; the organ demonstration if scheduled — ask at the entrance; the most powerful baroque organ experience available in Latvia). The organ (built 1779; 131 stops; 7,100 pipes; played during the regular Sunday service at 10am) is the finest historic instrument in the Baltic States.
Liepāja Old Town (the pedestrian Ziņu iela and Rīgas iela; the city market; the Rose Square; the Liepāja Museum; free to walk; a small but characterful centre of 19th-century Latvian port architecture) has a distinct energy that reflects the city’s music tradition. Liepāja is the birthplace of Latvian rock: the Menuets (the most celebrated Latvian rock band of the 1970s–80s; from Liepāja), the rock music festival tradition (Liepājas Dziņtars; annually; the most important rock festival in western Latvia), and the music school that has produced a disproportionate share of Latvian musicians.

Liepāja’s food scene is unpretentious but characterful. Pastnieka Māja (Grīzņu iela 1; the finest restaurant in Liepāja; creative Latvian cuisine with Kurzeme regional produce; €20–35 for a full dinner) is consistently the best option. The Liepāja market (the covered market in the city centre; fresh Baltic fish, local smoked eel — the finest smoked eel in Latvia; Kurzeme dairy products; daily 8am–5pm) is the essential morning food stop. Liepāja smoked eel (the most celebrated local food product; traditionally smoked in the fishing villages south of the city; €6–10 per 100g at the market) is the food experience available nowhere else in Latvia at this quality level. The rock-themed bars around the pedestrian centre (€3–5 per beer; the liveliest evening scene in western Latvia) complete the Liepāja evening.

Ecolines or Nordeka bus (3h; €6–12; from Riga International Bus Station; multiple daily; the coastal route through Jurmala and Tukums) is the standard transport to Liepāja.
The Karosta Prison ghost tour (Friday and Saturday nights; 10pm; €10; guide in Soviet guard uniform; the experience of a Soviet military prison cell) is the finest unusual heritage experience in Latvia.
Liepāja’s beach faces the open Baltic (the city motto: “Where the wind is born” is literal; the sea breeze is 15–25 km/h on most summer days).
