The Jurmala beach (the Majori section; free; the widest beach; Gulf water reaching 22–24°C in July–August due to the shallow, sheltered Gulf of Riga; beach volleyball, kayak rental, and sun beds available) is the finest urban beach in Latvia. The Gulf of Riga creates warmer, calmer swimming conditions than the open Baltic — excellent for families and for comfortable sea swimming.
💡 The Dubulti and Dzintari sections (1–2 stations west of Majori; the same beach quality with fewer crowds) are the best beach alternatives for visitors who find Majori too busy in peak season. The Majori beach promenade (Jomas iela — the pedestrian main street running parallel to the beach; 2km of cafes and restaurants) is the finest evening promenade in Latvia.
The wooden villa architecture of Jurmala (4,000+ preserved wooden villas from the 1870–1940 period; Art Nouveau, Historicism, and early modernist styles; the densest surviving wooden resort architecture in Northern Europe) fills every lane behind the beach dunes. The Dubulti and Dzintari villa lanes (1–2 stops west of Majori; Edinburgas prospekts; Bulduri) are the finest: elaborately carved wooden facades, coloured paint schemes, and an atmosphere unlike anything else in the Baltics.
💡 Rent a bicycle in Majori (€5–10/h from beach rental stands or any hotel) and cycle the villa lanes. The full Jurmala villa circuit (Majori to Dubulti to Bulduri; 8km; 1h cycling; flat throughout) is the most distinctive non-beach Jurmala experience. The Dzintari Concert Hall (the largest outdoor concert venue in Latvia; summer concerts June–August; schedule at dzintarikoncertzale.lv; €10–25) has the finest outdoor concert setting in the Baltics.
Kemeri National Park (15km west of Majori; train to Kemeri station then 3km walk; free; the bog boardwalk — a 3km circuit through a raised sphagnum bog; carnivorous sundew plants, dwarf pine, and bog pool reflections; 45 minutes) is the most distinctive natural attraction near Jurmala. The sulphur springs (adjacent to the Kemeri spa building; the origin of Jurmala’s 19th-century therapeutic spa tradition) and the wetland birdwatching (white-tailed eagle; osprey; black stork in the forest) complete the Kemeri experience.
💡 Combine the Kemeri bog morning (train from Riga at 9am; bog walk 10am; 1h) with a Jurmala beach afternoon (train back to Majori; 20 mins; beach from noon). This is one of the finest single-day nature + beach combinations available in the Baltic States, covering bog, birch forest, and Baltic sea in a single day.
Jomas iela (the Majori pedestrian main street; 2km long; running parallel to the beach; lined with cafes, restaurants, amber shops, ice cream kiosks, and the Jurmala market) is at its finest in the evening (7–10pm in summer; the post-beach crowd fills the outdoor terraces; the finest evening stroll in Latvia). Baltic amber (the most important craft souvenir in Latvia; authentic amber sold throughout Jomas iela at prices lower than Tallinn or Vilnius; pieces with insect inclusions from €20–200) is the essential purchase.
💡 Buy amber on Jomas iela (the market stalls at the Majori end have the most authentic and competitively priced pieces; look for the certification stamp on dealers; amber with inclusions is the most distinctive). Try kefir ice cream (€2–3 from any kiosk; the Baltic dairy dessert; tart and light; the most distinctively Latvian beach food) before the evening promenade.
Jurmala’s restaurant scene is seasonal but excellent in summer. Orizzonte (Jomas iela; €20–40; Italian-influenced seafood; the best terrace on the main street) and 36. Linija (the most creative Latvian seasonal menu in Jurmala; €25–45) are the two best dinner options. The beach pavilion cafes (fried fish, pancakes, and Latvian beer from €3–4) are the most practical beach lunch. The Jurmala market (near Majori station; fresh Gulf fish; smoked sprats; berries; the best morning food stop) and kefir ice cream from any kiosk (€2–3) are the essential Jurmala food experiences.

Trains from Riga Central (direction Tukums; every 30 minutes in summer; €1.80; 30 minutes to Majori) are the most practical Jurmala transport.
Get off the train one station earlier (Dubulti; 1 stop before Majori) for the same white sand beach with significantly fewer people.
Bicycle rental (€5–10/h; €15–25/day; beach stands and hotels) covers the full Jurmala villa circuit (8km; 1h) and the Kemeri direction (15km; 1.5h on the main road).
