Lake Kivu’s food scene is centred on fresh Nile perch and tilapia from the lake (the most widely available and best-value food in the lakeside towns; grilled or in a tomato and onion sauce; RWF 3,000–6,000 at any lakeside restaurant). The Lake Kivu Serena Hotel Rubavu restaurant (the finest formal dining on the lake; USD 15–30; the terrace; the lake view; the fresh Nile perch filleted at the table) and the Bralirwa Beer Garden (the most beloved local spot; RWF 1,500 beer; the lakeside terrace; the most sociable evening in Rubavu) are the two essential options. In Karongi: the Kibogora restaurant (the lakeside terrace; the freshest lake fish; RWF 4,000 for a full plate; the finest budget lake fish in Rwanda) is the essential lunch stop. Lake Kivu’s western shoreline faces the DRC and catches the full Congo Hills sunset. The Rubavu or Karongi waterfront at 5–6pm is the finest free moment on the lake.

The Congo Nile Trail day ride south from Rubavu (30km; bike hire USD 15–20/day) follows the lake above tea estates. The Kiremera viewpoint section is the finest cycling in Rwanda.
Napoleon Island bat colony (motorboat from Karongi; USD 10–15; depart 5pm) sends one million spectacled fruit bats airborne in a 30-minute spiral. One of Rwanda’s finest wildlife spectacles.
Lake Kivu has dissolved methane below 60m depth. Swim only in marked safe zones at established resorts — never from open rocks or unmonitored banks. The risk is real.
The Congo Nile road (227km; Rubavu south to Rusizi via the east shore; tea estate sections; 1–2 days by bicycle or hired vehicle) is the finest scenic drive in Rwanda.
Arrive Rubavu afternoon (from Nyungwe 1.5h or Musanze 1.5h). Overnight Karongi for next-day departure south (Rusizi/Nyungwe) or north (Musanze).
