The US advises travellers to reconsider travel to Rwanda because of the large Ebola outbreak in neighbouring DR Congo, although Rwanda has reported no cases. Rwanda refuses entry to foreign nationals who have been in DR Congo in the previous 30 days, and border crossings can close at short notice. Several governments advise against travel near the DRC border, including Rubavu (Gisenyi) and Rusizi districts. Gorilla trekking continues; check the latest advice before booking.

Built with Belgian support and opened in 1989, the museum covers Rwandan history, crafts, farming, hunting, architecture and royal traditions, with a reconstructed royal hut and traditional dance performances on request. The building is also linked to the 1994 genocide, when the former queen Rosalie Gicanda was killed nearby.

The large red-brick Catholic cathedral is a landmark on the main street. The leafy centre has cafés, craft shops and the university campus.

The surrounding hills are dotted with farms and coffee plantations; Huye Mountain is known for its coffee, and some farms offer tours.

North of Huye, Nyanza was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy. The King’s Palace Museum includes a reconstruction of a traditional royal residence and herds of long-horned Inyambo cattle.

Rwandan staples include brochettes (grilled skewers), isombe (cassava leaves), beans, plantains and sweet potatoes, often served as a buffet at lunch. Huye’s cafés serve excellent local coffee.
Restaurants are concentrated along the main street near the university.
Buses run frequently from Kigali, taking around two and a half to three hours. Kigali International Airport is the nearest airport. Buses continue west towards Nyungwe and Rusizi.
The centre is walkable; motorbike taxis and cars are available for longer trips.
Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc (RWF). Huye is inexpensive.
