The three main Agra monuments (Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah) form a triangle within 5km of each other; all three plus Fatehpur Sikri (40km west) can be visited in a single full day if starting at dawn at the Taj. Auto-rickshaws (negotiate before boarding; ₹100–200 for monument-to-monument; the full circuit including Fatehpur Sikri in a hired auto: ₹1,000–1,500 with waiting time) are the standard tourist transport. Uber is available. Pedicabs (cycle-rickshaws) operate in the Tajganj area around the Taj entrance. The Gatimaan Express train from Delhi (1h40; ₹750 AC chair; departs Hazrat Nizamuddin Station 8:10am, returns 8:30pm) makes the ideal Agra day trip from Delhi.
Oct–Mar is ideal (15–28°C; clear skies; the Taj marble at its most photogenic). Nov–Feb is the finest window. Apr–May is very hot (40–48°C). Jun–Sep monsoon brings fog and occasional rain; the gardens are green. The full moon dates are worth planning around for moonlight viewing.
The Taj Mahal entry (₹1,300 + ₹200 mausoleum) is the highest monument fee in India but represents extraordinary value. Accommodation ranges from ₹500 (budget) to ₹60,000+ (Oberoi Amarvilas). Per person per day.
The Taj Mahal (₹1,500 total for the main entry and mausoleum) and the Agra Fort (₹550) together for ₹2,050 (€23) give more concentrated Mughal architectural greatness than anywhere else in the world.

The ASI website (asi.payumoney.com) sells timed tickets. Queue times without pre-booking can exceed 90 minutes during peak season. Buy the night before.
The East Gate has the shortest morning queue. The Taj at sunrise (6–7am) glows pink then white — the marble changes colour over 30 minutes.
Special evening tickets (limited to 400 visitors; ₹750 + ₹200 security) sell out weeks ahead. Book through the ASI office in Agra, not online.
The Musamman Burj tower room is where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father Shah Jahan. The window facing the Taj across the Yamuna carries real weight.
Panchhi Petha (est. 1950) on Subhash Bazaar is Agra’s finest petha shop. Buy a 500g assorted box of the white gourd sweet in 40+ flavours.
Akbar’s abandoned capital 37km west is reachable by bus (₹30; 1 hour). The Buland Darwaza gateway (54m) is the finest Mughal arch in existence.
