The lanes of the old city are passable on foot and by cycle-rickshaw (for the wider lanes); auto-rickshaws cannot enter the narrow old city lanes. Varanasi is one of the cheapest cities in India for accommodation and food. The dawn boat ride (₹200–500) and the Ganga Aarti boat (₹100–200) are the only real activity costs; the ghats and the Aarti ceremony are otherwise free. Per person per day.

A private rowboat for 2 hours costs ₹300–500 from Assi Ghat. The ghats in dawn mist with lanterns still lit is the essential Varanasi experience.
The burning ghat cremates bodies 24 hours a day. Photography is absolutely prohibited. Witnessing respectfully from a boat is permitted and deeply moving.
The tiny shop near Vishwanath Gali has served fresh lassi in clay pots since 1925. Arrive at 8am. The mango version is the finest.
The nightly ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat is best from a boat on the river (₹200–300 per person). The ghat-side crowd obscures the view entirely.
Sarnath, where Buddha first taught, is 30 minutes by auto (₹150 return). The Dhamek Stupa and museum early Buddhist collection are extraordinary.
Visits to genuine silk-weaving families in the Peeli Kothi area (arrange via your hotel) let you buy direct at fair prices without commission shops.
