The Pink City (old walled city) is best explored on foot or by cycle-rickshaw (₹20–50; the rickshaws navigate the narrow bazaar lanes where autos and taxis cannot go). For the Amber Fort (11km north): Uber (₹150–200 each way) or the shared jeep service from the Hawa Mahal area (₹30–50/seat each way; the jeep departs when full; 25 min). The Jaipur Metro (2 lines; ₹9–22; limited coverage; useful for the station to Pink City segment) is less relevant for tourists than in Delhi or Mumbai. Auto-rickshaws (the pink-coloured electric autos) are available at ₹30–100 for most journeys; the scam of drivers receiving gemstone-shop commissions means using Uber/Ola is safer for first-time visitors.
Oct–Mar (15–28°C) is ideal. January has the JLF Literature Festival. The Elephant Festival (Holi; March) and the Kite Festival (Makar Sankranti; January) are the finest annual events. Apr–Jun is very hot (38–45°C). Jul–Sep monsoon is shorter than Delhi’s.
Jaipur is mid-range by Indian standards. The heritage palace hotels are the most expensive in Rajasthan. Street food (pyaaz kachori ₹20; dal baati churma ₹300) is excellent value. Per person per day.
Amber Fort (₹550), City Palace (₹700) and the Hawa Mahal (₹200) together for ₹1,450 — approximately €16 — give more concentrated Rajput architectural grandeur than any other three-monument circuit in India.

Drivers who offer free city tours almost always take you to gem shops earning commission. Politely decline and hire by meter or Ola/Uber instead.
The Palace of Winds is most photogenic from the street, in early morning light. By 9am tour groups block the best angle entirely.

Jeeps from the base cost ₹200 per person. The fort opens at 8am. Arriving at 7:45am means entering the first courtyard with almost no one there.

The 18th-century Samrat Yantra sundial tells time to 2-second accuracy. Stand at the base exactly at noon to watch it working in real time.
