Soufrière is a small town on Saint Lucia’s south-west coast and was the island’s capital under French rule. Above it rise the Pitons, two steep volcanic peaks: Gros Piton at 771m and Petit Piton at 743m.

The Pitons and the surrounding reefs and volcanic land were listed by UNESCO in 2004 as the Pitons Management Area. Around town are hot springs, waterfalls, cocoa estates and some of the island’s best snorkelling.

Gros Piton

Gros Piton hike

Gros Piton is the higher but easier climb, a steep trail with a required guide from the village of Fond Gens Libres. Petit Piton needs climbing skills and is not for most visitors.

Start early with plenty of water.

Sulphur Springs

Promoted as the “drive-in volcano”, this area of steaming vents and bubbling grey mud is part of a collapsed volcanic crater. You can bathe in warm mud pools below.

Remove silver jewellery; sulphur tarnishes it.
