Mykonos is a small Cycladic island (85 km²) that has been the most famous party destination in the Mediterranean since the 1960s, when artists, jet-setters and the international celebrity circuit discovered its combination of whitewashed Chora architecture, natural beaches and a social energy well ahead of its time. The island that Jackie Kennedy, Rudolf Nureyev and later the global DJ circuit chose for their summers holds its original character alongside a luxury beach-club economy that is now among the most expensive in Europe.

What makes Mykonos genuinely worth visiting beyond the nightlife is the Chora itself: the windmills of Kato Myli on the hill above the sea, the Little Venice neighbourhood of 17th-century fishing houses built directly over the water, and the deliberately labyrinthine street plan designed to confuse pirates that works equally well on tourists. Three kilometres offshore, the uninhabited sacred island of Delos — where Apollo and Artemis were born according to Greek mythology — is the most important archaeological site in the Cyclades and frequently overlooked in favour of the beach clubs.

Top Sights in Mykonos

Windmills of Kato Myli

The seven 16th-century Cycladic windmills on the Kato Myli ridge above Little Venice are the defining image of Mykonos. Built by the Venetians to mill wheat brought in by trade ships, they remain structurally intact. The ridge offers the best wide-angle view of Little Venice and Chora below — especially photogenic in the hour before sunset.

💡 The windmills (free) are best photographed at sunrise when the morning light catches the whitewash and the long shadows fall across the path. Combine with Little Venice in a single pre-breakfast walk: 5 minutes apart. The windmill hill also gives the finest view of the harbour.

Little Venice — Alefkandra

The neighbourhood of Alefkandra clusters around the waterfront below the Kato Myli ridge, its 18th-century sea captains’ houses built directly above the water with wooden balconies overhanging the Aegean. The bars along the water become very busy at sunset. Arrive for a late afternoon coffee and stay for the light — the Aegean turns deep purple as the sun drops behind the windmills.

💡 Little Venice (free to walk) is best at dusk when the bar tables fill over the water. Bar Katerina and Galleraki are the two famous water-view spots — arrive by 6:30pm in summer for a table. The combination of sunset, Aegean light and the music makes this the finest evening moment in Mykonos.

Chora — the Old Town

Mykonos Town (Chora) is a purposefully labyrinthine network of narrow marble-paved lanes — historically designed to confuse pirates. The Panagia Paraportiani church (a cluster of four interlocking Byzantine-era chapels) is the most photographed building on the island. The town is compact and easily walked; the main commercial area is a 10-minute walk from the ferry port.

💡 The Chora (free; the whitewashed labyrinth) is most atmospheric before 10am and after 10pm. The Paraportiani Church (free; Kastro area; 16th century; 4 churches merged into one structure) is best in the quiet morning hours. Map apps are less useful than following the sound of the sea.

Paradise Beach & South Coast

Paradise Beach is the most famous of Mykonos’s party beaches — a curved bay of fine golden sand backed by beach clubs, with music from noon until well after midnight in high season. Immediately east, Super Paradise offers a smaller, more sheltered version. Both are a 20-minute bus ride from the town bus stop at Fabrika Square; taxis are metered from the port.

💡 Water taxis from the Old Harbour (every 30 min in summer; €2–4) serve all south coast beaches. Super Paradise Beach (free sand section) has clearer water than Paradise Beach and is less commercial. Both have sun lounger hire from €15/pair. The beaches are best before 1pm and after 5pm.

Eating & Drinking

Mykonos food runs on two tracks. The beach-club economy (Nammos, Scorpios) is extraordinary in setting and price: a shared mezze lunch for four at Nammos can reach €400–800. The local track costs a fifth as much: Niko’s Taverna on the Old Port waterfront has been serving grilled octopus and fresh fish since 1967 at correct prices. The island’s own speciality is kopanisti — a spicy, sharp fermented cheese unique to Mykonos, served as a meze on bread with tomato for €4–8 and impossible to find in the same form anywhere else. The loukoumades stall on Matogianni Street (fried dough balls with honey and cinnamon, €4) is the essential street food stop.

Cocktail institutions: the Kastro bar (since 1969, windmill-view terrace), Babylon and 180° Sunset Bar. For nightlife: dinner at 10pm, cocktails at Little Venice from 11pm, clubs from 1am. Cavo Paradiso (open-air, above Paradise Beach, June–Sep, international DJ residencies) peaks between 2–5am.

Getting Around

The KTEL bus runs from Fabrika station (south: Platis Gialos, Psarou, Paradise) and Old Port (north: Agios Stefanos). Flat €2 fare; crowded and late in peak season. The water taxi to Paradise Beach (€10) is faster. Renting an ATV (€25–35/day) gives south-coast independence. Taxis are scarce in Jul–Aug; use the Free Now app or book ahead rather than queueing at the rank.

Best Time to Visit Mykonos

May and September are ideal: warm (22–26°C), fully open, fraction of the summer crowd at 40–60% lower accommodation rates. July–August is peak beach clubs, nightlife and price. January–March: most of the island closed.

Three Days in Mykonos

Three days: Chora exploration, Delos, the best beaches and one properly late night.

Day 1
Chora & Little Venice

Walk Chora without a plan: get lost in the alleys. Church of Paraportiani. Little Venice waterfront. Kastro bar terrace by 6pm (arrive early). Dinner at Niko’s Taverna, Old Port (queue accepted; excellent fresh fish). Cocktails at Little Venice until midnight.

💡 Chora at 8am (empty lanes, the bakers, the cats on the church steps). Paraportiani Church. Little Venice from 6:30pm (arrive early for water-view seats). Windmills at sunset.

Day 2Delos
Delos & Paradise Beach

Morning ferry to Delos (9am, Old Port; €20 return + €12 entry; 2–3h). Return by 1pm. Lunch in Chora. Afternoon: water taxi or bus to Paradise Beach (swim, one cocktail, leave by 6pm). Dinner in Chora at 10pm; begin the nightlife sequence.

💡 Delos ferry (€22 return; departs Old Harbour 9am and 10am; closed Mon). The 5 original marble lions and the House of Dionysus mosaic are the highlights. Allow 3 hours on the island. Return for Paradise Beach water taxi in the afternoon.

Day 3
South Coast & One Late Night

Rent an ATV. Psarou Beach (walk free; sunbeds at Nammos if budget allows), Elia Beach (most relaxed, water taxi €10), Agios Sostis on the north (no sunbeds, raw Cycladic character). Return at sunset. Dinner 10pm, Kastro bar 11pm, Cavo Paradiso from 1am.

💡 Super Paradise Beach water taxi (Old Harbour; €4; 30 min; every 30 min). Mykonos after midnight: Cavo Paradiso for international DJs, Scorpios for the sunset-to-midnight experience, Jackie O’ for free entry before midnight.

Travel Tips

Delos: the unmissable island 3km away

The sacred island of Apollo (30-min ferry from Old Port at 9am/10am, €20 return + €12 entry) is an entire ancient Greek city frozen in time, deserted, with nothing above it but sky.

🍾

Kopanisti: order it at every meal

A spicy, pungent fermented cheese unique to Mykonos. Served as a meze on bread with raw tomato for €4–8 at any taverna.

🎶

Nightlife starts at midnight, not 10pm

Clubs open at midnight and peak 2–5am. Cavo Paradiso above Paradise Beach is not interesting before 1:30am.

🧠

Set a daily budget and enforce it

Sunbeds at Psarou cost €100–200/pair; cocktails at beach clubs €20–30. Niko’s Taverna (Old Port) serves the same quality fish as Nammos for one-fifth of the price.

🏘

Book 3–6 months ahead for July

Mykonos hotels in July sell out by February. For a July trip, begin looking in January. May and September can be booked 4–8 weeks ahead at 40–60% lower rates.

📸

Windmills: dawn or dusk only

At midday: harsh light and maximum tourists. At dawn (6–7am): empty paths and extraordinary morning light on white walls.
