The Mara River crossing can happen at any time. Your guide will get radio intel from the ranger network. Arrive at the crossing before 7am and wait — patience is essential.
First-day game drives are often rushed as guides gauge your preferences. By day 2 the experience deepens noticeably. Three nights is the absolute minimum for the Mara.

Lift off at dawn for an hour drifting over the plains as the light comes up — herds below, champagne bush breakfast on landing (about USD 450, book well ahead). Fit in a short final game drive on the way to the airstrip or the long road back to Nairobi.
Keep your camera out on the transfer drive — some of the best sightings happen on the way out of the reserve.
The Masai Mara $80/day park entry fee is the most expensive in Kenya and makes the budget calculation straightforward: even the most affordable camps include meals and most include game drives, so the park fee is the dominant daily cost.
The private conservancy upgrade (Olare Motorogi, Mara North, or Naboisho; $80–150 pp/day additional) is the single most valuable safari enhancement in Kenya: off-road driving permitte.

Kenya has scrapped visas but most visitors, including UK, US and EU citizens, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travel. It costs about US$32.50, should be requested at least three days (and up to 90 days) ahead, and is single-entry. Since May 2025 most African nationals are exempt.
Apply only on the official etakenya.go.ke site, have proof of accommodation ready, and carry a yellow fever certificate if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever risk.
