Eating

Lamu dining is the most specifically Swahili of any Kenya destination and the most specifically Indian-Ocean-trade-influenced food culture in East Africa: the Swahili seafood biryani (the most specifically Lamu single dish: the biryani cooked with the fresh octopus, the coconut milk, and the Lamu pilau spice blend (the most complex single spice combination in Swahili cooking; the 15-spice blend includes dried Lamu black pepper, the most pungent single Kenyan black pepper produced in the Lamu Archipelago); at any Old Town restaurant for KES 500–800 pp), the mkate wa maji (the Lamu rice bread; baked in the most specifically Lamu ceramic ring mould; the most distinctive single Swahili bread in Kenya; KES 50–100 from any Old Town bakery at 7am), the Lamu crab and lobster (the freshest crustaceans at the lowest prices in Kenya: the morning fishermen bring the catch to the Lamu fish market (the most specifically atmospheric Kenya coast fish market at 6am; the octopus, the kingfish, the crab, and the lobster laid on the concrete slab; KES 500–1,500 for the whole lobster); and the Peponi Hotel terrace lunch (the most celebrated single Lamu meal: the fresh fish lunch on the Indian Ocean terrace with the Shela Beach beyond; KES 2,000–4,000 pp; the most specifically atmospheric dining experience in the Lamu Archipelago).

Tips

🚲

Walk Old Town at 6am: the donkeys, the doors, and total silence

Lamu has no motorized vehicles — only donkeys. At 6am the fishing boats return, the call to prayer echoes across the water, and not a tourist is in sight.

Dhow sunset: negotiate directly with the boatmen at the Lamu seafront

Traditional dhow sunset trips cost KES 1,000–2,000 per person, negotiated directly at the waterfront in the afternoon. Hotel-booked trips charge two to three times more.

🏃

Shela Beach dunes at dawn: the most specifically cinematic landscape in the Kenya coast

Walk 30 minutes along the seafront path to Shela Beach before 7am. The crescent sand dunes behind the empty beach are unlike any other landscape on the Kenya coast.

🏛

Visit the Lamu Museum first: the siwa horn is one of Africa’s great museum objects

The Lamu Museum (KES 1,200; next to the waterfront) houses two 17th-century ivory siwa horns — the finest examples of Swahili court art in existence. Visit first.
