Sinaia is a mountain town in the Prahova Valley of the Southern Carpathians, about 1.5 hours by train from Bucharest. It grew around a monastery founded in the late 17th century and became a royal resort in the 19th century.

Its main sight is Peleș Castle, built for King Carol I between 1873 and 1914. A cable car climbs from town to the Bucegi plateau, with hiking in summer and skiing in winter.

Try sarmale, mici (grilled sausages) and mountain dishes with polenta and sheep’s cheese.

Cafés near the castle are busy at weekends.

Getting There & Around

Trains from Bucharest take about 1.5 hours; many continue to Brașov. Driving can be slow because of heavy traffic in the Prahova Valley.

The town is walkable; the castle is a short uphill walk from the centre, and the cable car starts in the upper part of town.

🛂 Entry rules: EES and ETIAS

Romania is in the Schengen area, which has two EU border systems for non-EU visitors.

EES (in force): since 10 April 2026 the EU’s Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors’ passport details, fingerprints and a photo the first time they enter the Schengen area, replacing passport stamps. Allow extra time at the border on your first trip; later crossings are quicker. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are not registered.

ETIAS (not yet running): a €20 online travel authorisation for visitors who don’t need a visa, such as UK, US, Canadian and Australian citizens. It hasn’t started and no start date has been confirmed, so nobody can apply yet; ignore websites that offer to “pre-register” you for a fee.

Visa-free visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen area, not per country.
