The Mother Cathedral of the Armenian Church is traditionally said to have been founded in the early 4th century and rebuilt over the centuries. After a long restoration, it was reconsecrated in September 2024.

The remains of a round 7th-century cathedral, which collapsed in the 10th century, lie between Yerevan and Vagharshapat, with carved columns and capitals and a small museum.

Vagharshapat has simple cafés and restaurants near the cathedral complex serving khorovats, dolma and salads.

Vagharshapat is about 20km from central Yerevan, 30 to 40 minutes by taxi or marshrutka. Zvartnots ruins are on the way, close to the airport.
