Moorea lies just 17km from Tahiti, a short ferry ride from Papeete. Its jagged volcanic peaks, pineapple plantations and deep bays make it one of the most scenic islands in the South Pacific.

It is more relaxed and affordable than Bora Bora, with a good mix of resorts and guesthouses, hiking trails and a lagoon full of rays, turtles and reef sharks.

Try poisson cru, local pineapples, and grilled fish at a beachside snack.

Roulottes (food trucks) offer good-value meals in the evening.

Getting There & Around

Ferries from Papeete take about 30–45 minutes and run several times a day. There is also a small airport with short flights from Tahiti. Renting a car or scooter is the easiest way to get around the 60km coastal road.
