Cape Coast, a faded colonial town on Ghana’s palm-lined shore, holds some of West Africa’s most powerful history. Its whitewashed castle was a major hub of the transatlantic slave trade, and standing in its dungeons is a moving, unforgettable experience.

Beyond the weight of that past, the town has a lively fishing harbour, a laid-back seafront and, just inland, the rainforest of Kakum National Park with its famous treetop canopy walk, making it a rewarding two-day stop on the coast.

Top Sights in Cape Coast

Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle

This UNESCO-listed white fortress was one of the largest slave-holding sites on the coast. Guided tours through its dungeons and the Door of No Return are sobering and essential.

💡 Take the full guided tour; it is emotionally heavy but important.

Kakum Canopy Walk

Kakum Canopy Walk

In the rainforest north of town, a series of rope-and-plank bridges strung 30 metres up between giant trees lets you walk through the forest canopy at eye level with the birds.

💡 Arrive early for cooler air and the best chance of wildlife.

Fishing Harbour

Fishing Harbour

Below the castle, a chaotic, colourful harbour crowds with painted wooden pirogues as fishermen haul in and sell the day’s catch, a vivid slice of coastal life.

💡 Best in the morning; ask before photographing people.

Fort William

Fort William

A hilltop former British fort, now a lighthouse, offers a breezy overview of the town, castle and coastline and a quieter counterpoint to the main castle.

💡 The views over the rooftops and sea are the reward for the climb.

Assin Manso

Assin Manso

Inland, the Slave River site at Assin Manso, where captives took their last bath before the coast, is a place of pilgrimage and remembrance with a memorial and ancestral graves.

💡 Combine it with the castle for the full historical picture.

Eating & Drinking

Cape Coast eats simply and well, with fresh grilled and fried fish, banku and tilapia, jollof and groundnut soup at local chop bars and seafront spots. A few guesthouse restaurants cater to visitors with Western options and cold drinks. Try fresh coconut from a street seller and, for the brave, the local akpeteshie spirit. Seafood straight from the harbour is the star.
