Maafushi is the island that changed the Maldives. When the government allowed guesthouses on inhabited islands in 2009, this small strip in South Malé Atoll led the way — and turned a country of thousand-dollar resorts into somewhere backpackers and families could actually afford. Today it’s a friendly, laid-back village of guesthouses and dive shops where a night costs a fraction of a resort and the same turquoise lagoon laps the shore.

The trade-off is that this is a local Muslim island: alcohol is banned, and beyond a screened ‘bikini beach’ you dress modestly. But the sea more than compensates — house-reef snorkelling off the sand, cheap boat trips to uninhabited sandbanks, whale sharks and manta rays on day dives, and floating ‘beach club’ boats moored offshore where you can have a drink in international waters. Thirty minutes by speedboat from the airport, Maafushi is the easiest, cheapest doorway to the postcard Maldives.

Top Sights in Maafushi

The Bikini Beach

The Bikini Beach

Because Maafushi is an inhabited island, swimwear is only allowed on a fenced-off stretch of sand at the island’s south end — the ‘bikini beach’. It’s a lovely spot regardless: soft white sand, shallow turquoise water, hammocks and a swing in the sea for the classic Maldives photo, with the house reef a short swim out.

💡 Cover up with a t-shirt and shorts the moment you leave the beach — it’s a short walk back to your guesthouse through the village.

Sandbank & Snorkel Trips

Sandbank & Snorkel Trips

The signature Maafushi day out: a boat drops you on a bare crescent of white sand in the middle of the ocean, hours of empty-sandbank bliss, then snorkel stops over coral gardens, turtle points and nurse-shark spots. Half the guesthouses run their own trips and they’re a fraction of resort excursion prices.

💡 Book the combined sandbank-plus-snorkel trip the day before — morning departures get the calmest water and the sandbank to yourselves.

Whale Sharks & Manta Rays

Whale Sharks & Manta Rays

South Malé and the nearby South Ari Atoll are among the most reliable places on earth to swim with whale sharks — gentle giants up to twelve metres long — and, in season, with squadrons of manta rays at their cleaning stations. Full-day boat safaris from Maafushi go looking for both.

💡 The whale-shark day trip is long (an hour-plus each way) but worth it — take motion-sickness tablets and a rash vest; these are wild animals, so no sightings are guaranteed.

Floating Bars & Water Sports

Floating Bars & Water Sports

Since alcohol is banned on the island, enterprising operators moor ‘floating bars’ — boats anchored in international waters — where guesthouse guests are ferried for a sunset drink. Back on shore, the lagoon offers jet-skis, parasailing, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, most cheaper than at any resort.

💡 Sunset floating-bar trips fill up — sign up at your guesthouse in the morning; bring cash and a light layer for the ride back.

Eating & Drinking

Maafushi’s guesthouses nearly all have cafes, and the cooking leans to Maldivian-meets-traveller: fresh grilled tuna and reef fish, curries thick with coconut and curry leaf, roshi flatbread, and the island breakfast of mas huni (smoked tuna, coconut and onion) with sweet tea. A cluster of independent cafes serves everything from Maldivian short eats to pizza and Western breakfasts for the backpacker crowd. It’s all alcohol-free on the island — fresh watermelon and mango juices, milkshakes and strong local tea rule — with the floating bars offshore filling the sunset-drink gap. Portions are generous and prices a world away from resort menus.

One Day on Maafushi

Morning
Out to the sandbank

Board an early boat for a bare-sand islet in the open ocean — swim, sunbathe and snorkel the surrounding coral before the sun gets fierce, with turtle and nurse-shark stops on the way.

Midday
Village & lagoon

Back on the island, lunch of grilled tuna at a guesthouse cafe, then the bikini beach for the hammock and the sea swing, or the house reef straight off the sand.

Afternoon
Water sports or big fish

Jet-ski and paddleboard the lagoon, or — on the right day — join the long safari out to swim with whale sharks and manta rays in the deeper channels.

Evening
Sunset offshore

Ferry out to a floating bar anchored in international waters for a sunset drink over the atoll, then back to the island for a coconut curry and an early, star-filled night.

Travel Tips

Ferry or speedboat

The cheap public ferry from Malé takes 90 minutes and runs most days except Friday; speedboats do it in 30 minutes for more — check Friday schedules carefully.

👙

Respect local rules

Maafushi is an inhabited Muslim island — modest dress off the bikini beach, and no alcohol on the island itself; the floating bars fill that gap.

💸

A fraction of resort cost

Guesthouse islands opened the Maldives to normal budgets — the same lagoon and reefs for a tenth of a resort’s nightly rate.

🏄

Book excursions locally

Guesthouses run their own sandbank and diving trips far cheaper than agencies — arrange the day before, and compare a couple of places.

🐣

Time the big fish

Whale sharks are year-round in South Ari but calmer seas (Nov–Apr) make the long trip easier; manta season peaks in the wet months.

📷

The reefs are the point

Bring or rent a mask and fins — the house reef and sandbank snorkelling are the real Maldives, and free once you’re in the water.
