Terelj’s landmark is a huge granite formation weathered into the unmistakable shape of a turtle, rising from the valley floor and easy to scramble around.

Meals in Terelj come from the ger camps, serving Mongolian staples like buuz dumplings, mutton noodle soups and tsuivan, plus some Western dishes for tourists. A few camps offer the traditional khorkhog, meat slow-cooked with hot stones, if ordered ahead. Bring any snacks or drinks you want beyond the camp menus, and expect plenty of milk tea.
Drive from Ulaanbaatar via the giant Chinggis Khaan statue, reach Terelj, see Turtle Rock and hike up to the Aryabal temple.
