Tips

🌞

Enter at 7am: reach the summit before 9am and the heat

Sigiriya Rock (LKR 4,500; opens 7am) is a 200m climb. The summit is most photogenic in 7–9am light, and the exposed rock becomes dangerously hot after 10am in any season.

🏔

Climb Pidurangala at dawn: the best Sigiriya photograph for LKR 500

Pidurangala Rock (LKR 500; 15-min climb; 10 min from Sigiriya) gives the finest elevated view of Sigiriya Rock itself. Dawn arrival (5:30am) gives the best light and a near-empty summit.

🐞

Hornet protocol: stop, do not swat, back away slowly when rangers signal closure

When Sigiriya rangers blow whistles and signal, stop immediately, cover your face, and back away slowly. Running triggers colony defence responses from the rock-face hornet colonies.

🗽

Buy the Cultural Triangle Round Permit if visiting 2+ sites: saves LKR 4,000+

The Cultural Triangle Round Permit (US$62; covers Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, and Dambulla) saves money if visiting 2+ sites. Buy at the first Cultural Triangle site you visit.
