Tips

🍽

Arrive before 11am or after 4pm: the Old Street peak crush is extreme

Jiufen Old Street (bus 1062 or train to Ruifang then bus) has its worst overcrowding between 11am and 4pm on weekends. Arrive by 10:30am or after 4pm when day-trippers leave.

🌐

Shifen Waterfall is 25 min away by train: combine it with Jiufen

Shifen Waterfall (Pingxi Line from Ruifang; NT$60 train; NT$100 entry) is Taiwan’s widest waterfall and on the same rail branch as Jiufen. Combine both in one efficient day trip.

Stay overnight: Jiufen empties after 6pm and becomes extraordinary

Jiufen guesthouses (book at least 2 weeks ahead; from NT$1,500/night) put you in the village after day crowds depart. The evening teahouse lantern light and quiet mountain air are extraordinary.

🚌

The red paper lanterns light between 5 and 5:30pm at dusk

The A-Mei Tea House (reservation required for lantern-lit tables) turns on its red paper lanterns between 5 and 5:30pm.
