Port of Spain runs on rhythm. The capital of Trinidad and Tobago is the birthplace of steelpan, calypso and soca, and home to the greatest street party on earth — Carnival, two days of feathers, sequins and sound that the whole city spends the year building toward. Even outside the season, this is a place with music in its bones, a Caribbean capital that feels more like a slice of South America, cosmopolitan and gloriously mixed.

It is a working city rather than a postcard one, and the better for it. The green expanse of the Queen’s Park Savannah anchors downtown; the hills behind fill with lights at night; and the food — a delirious blend of African, Indian, Chinese, Creole and Middle Eastern — is among the best in the region. Use Port of Spain as your base for Maracas Bay, the ibis-filled Caroni swamp and the wild north coast, and let the island’s energy carry you.

Top Sights in Port of Spain

Carnival

Carnival

The soul of the city — the Caribbean’s biggest Carnival, a two-day explosion of masquerade bands, steelpan, soca and street dancing before Lent. If you can time a visit to it, do.

💡 Carnival falls the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday — book far ahead.

Queen’s Park Savannah

Queen’s Park Savannah

The vast green heart of the city, ringed by the grand colonial ‘Magnificent Seven’ mansions and the Botanic Gardens — the stage for Carnival’s biggest events.

💡 Try a coconut water from the vendors around the edge.

Caroni Bird Sanctuary

Caroni Bird Sanctuary

A mangrove swamp south of the city where, at dusk, thousands of scarlet ibis — the national bird — flood in to roost, turning the trees blood-red. Unforgettable.

💡 Take an evening boat tour timed for the sunset roosting.

Maracas Bay

Maracas Bay

The island’s favourite beach, reached by a spectacular drive over the Northern Range — golden sand, green cliffs, and the legendary bake and shark from the beach huts.

💡 The road over the mountains is half the experience — stop at the lookout.

Pitch Lake & Beyond

Pitch Lake & Beyond

A day trip south reaches the world’s largest natural asphalt lake — a bizarre, walkable expanse of tar — and the wider wild south of Trinidad.

💡 Go with a guide; the surface looks solid but shifts underfoot.

Eating & Drinking

Trinidad may have the best street food in the Caribbean, and Port of Spain is where to eat it. The national obsession is doubles — curried chickpeas folded into soft fried bara bread, eaten for breakfast from a cart for pocket change. Then there is roti heavy with curried goat or shrimp, bake and shark at Maracas, pelau, and pholourie by the bagful. The island’s Indian, African, Creole and Chinese roots collide gloriously on every plate. Wash it down with a cold Carib or Stag beer, or a rum — Trinidad makes some of the world’s finest. Eat where the queue is longest and you will not go wrong.

Getting Around

Downtown Port of Spain is walkable by day, though it empties and is best avoided on foot late at night. For everything else, taxis are the norm — shared route taxis and maxi-taxis (minibuses) run fixed routes cheaply, while private taxis and app-based rides are easy to arrange. Traffic is heavy, so allow time. To reach Maracas, Caroni or the south you really want a hired car with driver or a tour, which spares you the mountain roads. From Piarco Airport, a fixed-fare taxi reaches the city in about 40 minutes.

Travel Tips

🎉

Time it with Carnival

If you possibly can, visit for Carnival (Feb/Mar) — but book flights and rooms many months ahead.

🌭

Eat doubles for breakfast

The national street food is best in the morning from a busy cart — cheap, quick and unmissable.

🌙

Take care after dark

Downtown empties at night; use taxis rather than walking, and keep to busier, well-lit areas.

🚗

Hire a driver for trips

For Maracas, Caroni and the south, a driver or tour beats tackling the mountain roads and traffic yourself.

❓ Common Questions about Port of Spain

Quick answers to the questions travellers most often ask before visiting Port of Spain.

Is Port of Spain safe for tourists?+

Port of Spain is generally fine by day in the main areas, but crime is a real concern, so take normal city precautions: use taxis after dark, avoid displaying valuables, and steer clear of quieter downtown streets at night. Check current travel advice before you go.

When is Trinidad Carnival?+

Carnival falls on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday — usually February or early March. It is the Caribbean’s biggest, and flights and accommodation sell out months in advance, so plan early.

What food should I try in Port of Spain?+

Start with doubles (curried chickpeas in fried bara), then roti, bake and shark at Maracas, pelau and pholourie. Trinidad’s mix of Indian, African, Creole and Chinese cooking makes it one of the Caribbean’s best food destinations.

How many days do you need in Port of Spain?+

Two to three days covers the city, the Caroni ibis roost and a Maracas beach day. Add more — or a hop to Tobago — for reefs, rainforest and the quieter side of the two-island nation.
