Peel is the Isle of Man’s west-coast fishing town and, for many visitors, its most attractive: a maze of narrow sandstone streets behind a sandy bay, a working harbour, and the ruins of Peel Castle on St Patrick’s Isle, joined to the town by a causeway. It faces the sunset, and on clear evenings you can see the Mourne Mountains in Ireland.

Peel is known for its kippers, smoked here for more than a century, and for the House of Manannan, the island’s best museum of its Celtic and Viking past. It makes a quieter base than Douglas, 20 minutes away across the island.

Top Sights in Peel

Peel Castle on St Patrick’s Isle

Peel Castle

A ruined castle and cathedral on St Patrick’s Isle, with walls built by Norse kings in the 11th century around a far older Christian site. The walk around the outside of the walls is free and has superb sea views.

Walk the breakwater beyond the castle at sunset.

The House of Manannan museum in Peel

House of Manannan

An engaging, hands-on museum telling the story of the Celts, Vikings and Manx sea traders, with a reconstructed roundhouse and a full-size Viking longship.

A joint ticket covers Peel Castle as well.

Peel harbour and quayside, Isle of Man

Peel Harbour & Quay

Fishing boats, a marina and old warehouses line the quay, where the kipper smokehouses have worked for generations. Queenies landed here are served in the pubs and restaurants nearby.

Buy kippers direct from the smokehouse to take home.

Thatched cottage at Niarbyl, Isle of Man

Niarbyl

Ten minutes south, a tiny bay with thatched fishermen’s cottages, a café and a geological curiosity: a visible line in the rocks where two ancient continents collided. Seals are common offshore.

The coastal path south of Niarbyl is one of the finest on the island.

Tynwald Hill at St John’s, Isle of Man

Tynwald Hill, St John’s

A few kilometres inland, the stepped mound where the Manx parliament, Tynwald – the oldest continuous parliament in the world – meets in the open air each year on 5 July to proclaim new laws.

Tynwald Day (5 July) is a national holiday with a fair.

Eating & Drinking

Peel is the place for seafood: kippers for breakfast, queenies with garlic butter, crab and fresh fish. Several restaurants and pubs around the harbour and the promenade serve them, along with Manx ice cream from the famous parlour on the front.

Pubs along the quay are cosy in winter and spill onto the harbourside in summer.

Getting There & Around

Peel is about 20 minutes by car or 35 minutes by bus from Douglas, where the ferries arrive; Ronaldsway Airport is around 35 minutes away. Buses run frequently between Douglas and Peel via St John’s.

The town is small and best explored on foot. A car or the bus network is useful for Niarbyl and the west-coast glens.
