The Culinary Capital of the Americas

The Miraflores Malecón is the 5km clifftop promenade above the Pacific surf — the finest urban seafront walk in South America, with the Lima coastline stretching south to Chorrillos and north to Callao. Paragliders launch from the Larcomar cliff at 5pm daily; the Pacific view is only achievable from the cliff edge.
💡 La Mar (the finest ceviche restaurant in Peru; Miraflores; opens 10am) has walk-in lunch from noon — arrive at 9:30am to secure a table. The ceviche clásico and the tiradito are the two non-negotiable orders.

The Larco Museum (S/40; 18th-century viceregal mansion; Pueblo Libre) holds the finest collection of pre-Columbian Andean gold and ceramics in the world — the vault room has 45,000 unsorted archaeological objects. The Mochica erotic pottery gallery (a frank collection of 2,000-year-old ceramic sexuality) is the most discussed room.
💡 The Larco Museum at 9am (S/40; Pueblo Libre; Uber S/12 from Miraflores) gives you the gold vault and the Mochica gallery to yourself before the tour groups arrive by bus at 10:30am.

Barranco is the bohemian coastal neighbourhood south of Miraflores — the finest gallery, bar, and restaurant scene in Lima in a 1km coastal village of old Peruvian houses. The Puente de los Suspiros (the 19th-century wooden pedestrian bridge over the ravine to the Pacific steps) is the finest romantic walk in Lima.
💡 The Miraflores Malecón at 6pm — paragliders above the Pacific, the fog lifting, the coastline to the south — is the finest free hour in Lima. Walk south from Parque del Amor to the Larcomar viewpoint.

Lima’s food culture is the finest in South America — the product of Andean, Spanish, Japanese (Nikkei), and Chinese (chifa) culinary traditions converging in a single city. The ceviche clásico (sea bass; leche de tigre; cancha; choclo), the causa (potato terrine), and the lomo saltado (Chinese-Peruvian stir-fried beef) are the three essential dishes.
💡 The Lima Historic Centre (30 min by Metropolitano; the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, and the San Francisco catacombs at S/20) has the finest Spanish colonial architecture in the Americas.

Cabify (the Spanish ride-hailing competitor; similar coverage; sometimes cheaper than Uber in peak hour) is the supplement. Lima has the most unusual climate of any major city: the garua coastal fog covers the sky most of the year. Dec–Mar is the “summer” when the sun breaks through (22–28°C; the Pacific beaches accessible). Apr–Nov: the grey overcast (15–22°C; the museums and restaurants are excellent year-round regardless).
