Gyumri is Armenia’s second-largest city, about 120km north-west of Yerevan near the Turkish border. In the 19th century, as the Russian imperial garrison town of Alexandropol, it grew into a wealthy trading city, and its old quarter of black and red tuff houses is the best-preserved historic townscape in Armenia.

The city was badly hit by the 1988 Spitak earthquake, and some damage is still visible. Today it is known for its crafts, artists and local humour, and it makes an easy trip from Yerevan.
