Lake Baikal, curving for 600 kilometres through the mountains of southern Siberia, is the deepest and oldest lake on earth, holding a fifth of the world’s unfrozen fresh water in astonishingly clear, cold depths ringed by taiga forest.

A place of raw natural power and Buryat shamanic legend, Baikal transforms with the seasons: crystalline blue and hikeable in summer, then frozen into a vast sheet of turquoise ice you can walk, skate and drive across in the depths of the Siberian winter.

Top Sights in Lake Baikal

Olkhon Island

Olkhon Island

The lake’s largest island is its spiritual and scenic heart, a place of windswept steppe, larch forest, dramatic cliffs and Buryat shamanism, based around the village of Khuzhir.

💡 Take an UAZ van tour to the island’s northern capes.

Shaman Rock

Shaman Rock

The twin-peaked Cape Burkhan on Olkhon, one of Asia’s most sacred shamanic sites, rises from the water in a scene draped with colourful prayer ribbons.

💡 Approach respectfully; it is a holy site for the Buryat people.

Listvyanka

Listvyanka

The most accessible lakeside village, an easy trip from Irkutsk, offers Baikal museum exhibits, smoked omul fish stalls, boat trips and a chairlift to a viewpoint.

💡 Try the local smoked omul fish from the market stalls.

Circum-Baikal Railway

Circum-Baikal Railway

This historic engineering marvel hugs the southern shore through tunnels and stone galleries, best experienced on a slow scenic train ride above the water.

💡 Day excursion trains run in the warmer months.

Frozen Baikal

Frozen Baikal

In late winter the lake freezes into a metre-thick sheet of glassy, cracked turquoise ice, walkable and driveable, dotted with ice caves and methane bubbles frozen in place.

💡 February to March is prime ice season; go with a guide on the ice.

Eating & Drinking

Baikal’s signature dish is omul, an endemic whitefish, served smoked, grilled or in soup at lakeside stalls and guesthouses. Buryat cuisine adds hearty buuza (steamed meat dumplings), rich meat soups and dairy, well suited to the Siberian cold. Meals on Olkhon are usually home-cooked at your guesthouse, generous and warming, often with wild berries, pine nuts and strong black tea.

Travel Tips

📄

Check entry rules

Russia’s visa, entry and payment conditions change often and foreign cards may not work; verify the latest before booking.

🚂

Base in Irkutsk

Most trips start in Irkutsk on the Trans-Siberian; arrange Baikal transport and guesthouses from there.

🧊

Dress for extremes

Summers are short and mild, winters brutally cold; pack serious layers for the ice season.

💳

Bring cash

Foreign cards are widely unusable and ATMs are scarce at the lake; carry enough rubles.

Useful Apps

Baikal is remote; download maps and translation offline in Irkutsk.
