Russia's subtropical Black Sea resort and ski gateway
⚠️ Travel advisory: most governments advise against travel
The US, UK and many other governments advise against all travel to Russia because of the war in Ukraine, the risk of arbitrary detention and limited consular support. Western bank cards do not work there. This guide is kept for background and future planning.

Sochi’s long pebble beaches and palm-lined seafront promenades are the heart of its summer scene, backed by cafes, resorts and the buzz of Russian holidaymakers.
Bring water shoes for the pebbles; central beaches are liveliest.

An hour inland, this alpine resort town hosts the 2014 Olympic ski slopes, with gondolas rising to peaks for skiing in winter and hiking and views in summer.
Ride the cable cars up for mountain views even in summer.

The coastal Olympic Park preserves the striking 2014 Winter Games venues around a central plaza and musical fountain, next to a Formula 1 circuit and theme park.
Evenings bring the fountain light-and-music show.

The hillside Dendrarium gathers subtropical plants from around the world across terraced gardens, linked by a cable car with sweeping views over the sea.
Take the cable car up and stroll down through the gardens.

A scenic trail through a wooded gorge near the coast leads to a series of waterfalls and pools, a refreshing nature escape close to the city.
Wear good shoes; the gorge trail can be slippery.
Sochi’s food reflects its southern, seaside setting and Caucasus neighbours. Feast on Black Sea fish, Georgian khachapuri and khinkali, Adjarian cheese breads, grilled shashlik and fresh local fruit. Seafront restaurants and mountain cafes abound, and the region produces its own wine and tea, grown on the hillsides. It is a relaxed, flavourful scene built around long summer meals by the sea.
Relax on the beach and seafront promenade, then ride the cable car through the subtropical arboretum for sea views.
Head to Krasnaya Polyana for cable-car rides, alpine views and hiking or skiing depending on the season.
Explore the Olympic Park and its fountain show, then hike the Agura waterfalls gorge near the coast.
Russia’s visa, entry and payment conditions change often and foreign cards may not work; verify the latest before booking.
In spring you can ski at Krasnaya Polyana and swim in the Black Sea in one trip; pack for both.
Cards issued abroad are widely unusable; bring and exchange cash for rubles.
Sochi’s beaches are pebbly, not sandy; water shoes make swimming far more comfortable.
