⚠️ Travel advisory: check before you go

In September 2026 the US raised its advice to “reconsider travel” for this region because of tensions involving Iran. Flights and tourism are operating normally, but airspace closures and cancellations can happen at short notice, so keep plans flexible and travel insurance in place.

AlUla, in Saudi Arabia’s northwest, is the Kingdom’s crown jewel of heritage: a vast desert valley of wind-sculpted sandstone, ancient oases and the monumental rock-cut tombs of Hegra, the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Once a caravan stop on the incense route, AlUla today blends 2,000 years of history with striking contemporary design, from a mirrored concert hall to luxury desert resorts. It is Saudi Arabia’s answer to Petra, only far less crowded.

⚠️ Travel advice (checked October 2026): In 2026, Iranian missile and drone strikes hit several Gulf states and disrupted flights across the region. As of August 2026 the UK Foreign Office (FCDO) no longer advises against travel to Riyadh and the Eastern Province, but it warns that the situation remains unpredictable, attacks could resume at short notice and airspace can close without warning. Check your government’s latest advice and your airline before travelling. The FCDO still advises against all travel within 10km of the Yemen border and against all but essential travel between 10km and 80km from it.

Top Sights in AlUla

Hegra

Hegra

Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO site, Hegra (Madain Salih) preserves over 100 monumental Nabataean tombs carved into desert outcrops, the sister city to Jordan’s Petra and utterly uncrowded.

Visit with a rawi guide via the official AlUla tickets; go early or late for the light.

Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock

A giant natural sandstone arch eroded into the unmistakable shape of an elephant, glowing red at sunset above a sunken lounge area with cafes in the sand.

Come for sunset drinks with the rock floodlit afterwards.

AlUla Old Town

AlUla Old Town

A labyrinth of some 900 mudbrick and stone houses abandoned last century, now partly restored with artisan shops and cafes, overlooked by a hilltop citadel.

Climb to the citadel for views over the oasis and old town.

Dadan and Jabal Ikmah

Dadan and Jabal Ikmah

The ancient capital of Dadan and the nearby ‘open library’ of Jabal Ikmah, a canyon covered in hundreds of ancient inscriptions, reveal AlUla’s deep pre-Nabataean past.

Book the guided experiences through the official visitor centre.

Maraya

Maraya

The world’s largest mirrored building reflects the surrounding desert canyon across its facade, an extraordinary concert hall and design icon set amid the sandstone.

Photograph it by day for the mirror effect; events sell out fast.

Eating & Drinking

AlUla sits in a fertile oasis famous for its dates and citrus, and local menus feature lamb and rice dishes, fresh bread, honey and cardamom coffee. The dining scene has grown quickly with tourism, from simple cafés to acclaimed restaurants set among the sandstone.

AlUla Old Town has relaxed cafés and artisan food stalls along its restored lanes, and the desert resorts offer fine dining under the stars. Alcohol is not served, and it is worth booking popular restaurants in the busy winter season.

Getting There & Around

AlUla International Airport has domestic flights from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, and some international routes, including from Dubai and Doha. Alternatively, drive from Madinah or Tabuk on good roads. Sights are spread out, so most visitors hire a car or use the official tours and shuttles. Hegra is visited on timed guided tours booked through Experience AlUla.

3 Days in AlUla

Three days lets you see AlUla’s Nabataean tombs, its older kingdoms and the oasis itself.

Day 1
Old Town & Elephant Rock

Wander the restored lanes of AlUla Old Town and climb to the citadel, then head to Elephant Rock for sunset among the sandstone outcrops.

Elephant Rock’s seating area gets busy at sunset; arrive a little early.

Day 2
Hegra

Spend the morning at Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, with its monumental Nabataean tombs. In the afternoon, visit Dadan and the inscriptions of Jabal Ikmah.

Hegra is exposed, so bring sun protection even in winter.

Day 3
Maraya & the oasis

See Maraya, the mirrored concert hall, and explore the oasis by bike or on foot, or take an early balloon flight over the valley.

Check event dates: Maraya is used as a venue and access varies.
