This beautifully ornamented early-20th-century merchant’s mansion of coral stone, with intricate carved plasterwork, is the finest of Farasan’s pearling-era heritage buildings.

Farasan’s mangroves and flats shelter the endemic Farasan gazelle, migrating birds, herons and, offshore, dolphins and the seasonal gathering of parrotfish.

The islands’ small main town has an Ottoman fort, old mosques, a fish market and a relaxed pace, the base for ferries, supplies and exploring.

Farasan is all about the sea: fresh Red Sea fish and seafood grilled or spiced simply, served at the village’s modest eateries alongside rice, dates and Saudi coffee. The islands are famous within the Kingdom for their seafood and the seasonal parrotfish harvest. Options are basic and few, so bring supplies for beach days; the reward is fresh fish with a genuinely local, unhurried feel.
Take the ferry from Jazan, settle in the village, and visit the Al Najdi house and Ottoman fort before a seafood dinner.
Spend the day on the white-sand beaches, snorkel or dive the coral reefs, and watch for dolphins and birds among the mangroves.
Free government ferries run from Jazan to the islands but fill up; arrive early and check the schedule.
Facilities and ATMs are very limited; carry riyals, water and provisions for beach days.
Modest dress applies, including cover-ups away from the water.
October to April is warm and pleasant; summers are very hot and humid.
