Gjirokastër, in the Drino valley of southern Albania, is known as the “city of stone” for its fortified tower houses with grey stone roofs, stacked up a steep hillside below a huge castle. With Berat, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2005 as rare examples of well-preserved Ottoman towns.

The novelist Ismail Kadare was born here, and the city appears in his work. Cobbled lanes, a lively bazaar and mountain views make it one of the most rewarding stops in Albania.

Eating & Drinking

Try qifqi, the local rice balls with herbs and egg, along with pasha qofte (meatball soup), lamb, local cheese and honey. Restaurants in the bazaar and near the castle often have terraces with views.

Raki is offered as a welcome in many guesthouses.

Getting There & Around

Buses run from Saranda (about an hour), Tirana (about four hours) and Berat. Most stop in the new town below; take a taxi or walk uphill to the bazaar.

The old town is steep and cobbled, so wear good shoes. The Blue Eye spring is an easy day trip.
