Andorra la Vella is the highest capital in Europe — a compact, energetic town wedged into a deep Pyrenean valley at over 1,000 metres, ringed by peaks and threaded by mountain rivers. Capital of the tiny principality co-ruled by a French president and a Spanish bishop, it blends a small medieval core of narrow lanes and stone churches with a modern, prosperous city famous above all for one thing: shopping.

Thanks to Andorra’s duty-free status, la Vella’s long main street is a near-continuous run of shops selling everything from electronics and perfume to skis and designer fashion at tempting prices — drawing millions of cross-border bargain-hunters. But there is more here than retail: the atmospheric Barri Antic (old quarter), the historic Casa de la Vall parliament, striking public sculptures, and the vast Caldea thermal spa fed by hot springs. And whichever way you look, the mountains rise dramatically at the end of every street, with world-class skiing and hiking just minutes away.

The City & Its Setting

The City & Its Setting

Andorra la Vella fills a dramatic valley floor, its buildings climbing the slopes with snow-capped Pyrenean peaks rising at the end of every street.

💡 The aerial views from the surrounding roads and lifts are spectacular.

Pont de Paris & Riverside

Pont de Paris & Riverside

The striking Pont de Paris bridge and the landscaped banks of the Gran Valira river are among the city’s most photographed spots.

💡 Lovely by day and dramatically lit after dark.

Public Art & Sculptures

Public Art & Sculptures

La Vella is dotted with striking modern sculptures, most famously Dalí’s Nobility of Time melting clock in the city centre.

💡 Look for the Dalí clock near the main shopping street.

Barri Antic & Casa de la Vall

Barri Antic & Casa de la Vall

The old quarter’s cobbled lanes hold the historic Casa de la Vall, Andorra’s centuries-old parliament house, and the Sant Esteve church.

💡 The compact old town is easily explored on foot between shops.

Shopping & Caldea Spa

Shopping & Caldea Spa

Duty-free Andorra la Vella is a shopping mecca, and after a day’s browsing the vast Caldea thermal spa offers hot-spring bathing under the peaks.

💡 Caldea is Europe’s largest mountain spa — perfect after skiing or shopping.

Eating & Drinking

Andorran food is hearty mountain fare blending Catalan, French and Spanish influences — perfect after a day on the slopes. Look for trinxat (a cabbage-and-potato hash with pork), escudella (a rich winter stew), grilled meats cooked a la llosa on hot stone, wild mushrooms, and cheeses and charcuterie from the high valleys. La Vella has everything from cosy bordas (rustic converted barns) serving traditional dishes to tapas bars, Catalan restaurants and international dining. Thanks to low duties, wine, spirits and dining out can be good value. Don’t miss a hot chocolate or a mountain cafè after shopping, or a lively tapas crawl in the old quarter.

Getting Around

Andorra has no airport or railway, so nearly everyone arrives by road. The nearest airports are Barcelona and Toulouse (each around 2.5 to 3 hours away), with direct buses running to Andorra la Vella; there are also regular buses from Barcelona’s airport and city. Within the country, an efficient and cheap national bus network links la Vella with the villages and ski resorts, and the compact capital is very walkable. A rental car is useful for exploring the high valleys and reaching trailheads, though traffic and parking in la Vella can be busy, especially on shopping weekends. Winter drivers should carry snow chains.
