Hallstatt is the most photographed village in the world — a settlement of 780 people clinging to the narrow shelf of rock between the sheer face of the Dachstein limestone and the mirror surface of the Hallstätter See, so perfectly reflected in the lake at dawn that the image has been replicated as a tourist village in China’s Guangdong province. The UNESCO World Heritage listing (the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape; 1997) covers the entire lake and mountain system.

Hallstatt has been continuously inhabited and continuously mining salt since at least 1000 BC — the archaeological period “Hallstatt Culture” (1200–450 BC) is named after this single village. The Beinhaus (the Bone House; the ossuary where 1,228 skulls are displayed with the name and date of death painted on each skull in flower patterns) is the most unusual single room in Austria.

The Village Reflection & Lake Promenade

The Hallstatt village promenade (the lakefront walk from the Marktplatz to the southern ferry landing; the reflection of the village church spire and the Dachstein mountains in the Hallstätter See; 30 min; free) is the most reproduced natural-village photograph in the world. The dawn reflection (6:55am first ferry; the dead-calm lake surface) is the finest version.

💡 The Hallstatt dawn reflection (the first ferry at 6:55am; €3; the Marktplatz lakefront jetty; the dead-calm lake surface) is the most reproduced village photograph in the world — completely uncrowded at 7am.

The Beinhaus — The Bone House

The Beinhaus (Bone House; €1.50; open May–Oct; the ossuary chapel on the hill above the Catholic church) has 1,228 decorated skulls — the most recently decorated in 1995 have the name, date of death, and flower motifs painted in oil. The practice arose because Hallstatt’s rock-shelf cemetery had space for only 12–16 coffin burials at one time.

💡 The Beinhaus (€1.50; open May–Oct 10am–5pm; the 1,228 decorated skulls with oil-painted flower motifs and dates of death) is the most unusual single room in Austria.

The Salt Mine (Salzwelten)

The Hallstatt Salt Mine (Salzwelten; the oldest working salt mine in the world; Bronze Age tools from 1000 BC in the underground museum; the 64m wooden miners’ slide; the underground salt lake; €36 including the Salzbergbahn funicular) requires a 45-minute guided tour and is best on the first tour of the day (10am). Book online at salzwelten.at.

💡 The Salt Mine first tour (10am; €36 including the funicular; book at salzwelten.at) is the least crowded — the afternoon tours fill with day-tripper groups from Salzburg and Vienna.

The Salzberg Viewpoint & Dachstein Glacier

The Salzberg viewpoint (at the top of the Salzbergbahn funicular; 360m above the village; the funicular alone at €18) gives the finest aerial view of the Hallstätter See — the entire 8km-long lake, the village on its 50m-wide rock shelf, and the 2,995m Dachstein massif behind.

💡 Hallstatt after 5pm (when the day-tripper buses have left; the village returns to its 780 inhabitants; the lake perfectly still for the evening reflection) is the finest version — available only to overnight guests.

Eating & Drinking

Hallstatt’s restaurant scene is small and priced to the captive tourist market: expect to pay € 5–8 more per dish than equivalent restaurants in Salzburg or Bad Ischl. The Restaurant am See (the lakeside terrace restaurant; the Salzkammergut freshwater fish — the Reinanke (the lake whitefish; the most specifically Salzkammergut fish; € 22–32; the most authentic lake region meal), the Forelle (the trout; € 18–26), and the Saibling (the Arctic char; € 20–28) are the three freshwater fish worth ordering), the Gasthof Simony (the oldest restaurant in Hallstatt; the traditional Austrian cuisine; € 18–30 pp), and the self-catering option (buying provisions at the small Hallstatt supermarket or in Bad Ischl before arrival) are the three practical approaches to eating in a village of 780 people with 10,000 daily visitors.
