Srimangal is the tea capital of Bangladesh, a small town in the Sylhet hills surrounded by some of the country’s greenest and most photogenic scenery. Endless tea gardens, rainforest and tribal villages make it the finest slow-travel base in the country.

The air is cooler and cleaner here than in the lowland cities, and the pace is set by the rhythms of the tea estates and the calls of gibbons in the nearby forest.

Top Sights in Srimangal

Tea Gardens

Tea Gardens

Srimangal is ringed by endless emerald tea estates that roll over the low hills, dotted with pickers and shade trees. Walking or cycling the estate lanes at dawn, when mist hangs over the bushes, is unforgettable.

💡 Early morning light is best; ask permission before entering working estates.

Lawachara National Park

Lawachara National Park

A pocket of semi-evergreen rainforest just outside town, laced with walking trails and home to the rare hoolock gibbon, whose whooping calls echo through the canopy at dawn.

💡 Hire a park guide for the best chance of spotting gibbons and birds.

Seven-Layer Tea

Seven-Layer Tea

Srimangal’s quirky claim to fame is seven-colour tea, a layered glass of teas of different densities invented at a local stall. Sipping it is a rite of passage for visitors to the tea capital.

💡 The original stall is a short rickshaw ride from the centre; go for the novelty as much as the taste.

Madhabpur Lake

Madhabpur Lake

A serene lake set among the tea estates, fringed with blue water lilies and backed by forested hills, a peaceful spot for a slow afternoon walk and birdwatching.

💡 Combine it with a tea-estate tour; it is loveliest in the late afternoon.

Tribal Villages

Tribal Villages

The hills around Srimangal are home to Khasi and Manipuri communities who grow betel leaf and weave distinctive textiles. Village visits offer a glimpse of their culture, dance and crafts.

💡 Visit respectfully with a local guide and buy directly from the weavers.

Eating & Drinking

Beyond the famous seven-layer tea, Srimangal serves Sylheti specialities: satkora citrus beef, freshwater fish curries and mustard-laced dishes, plus fresh tea by the pot everywhere you turn. Small local eateries do it best.
