One of the highest and most beautiful viewpoints in Bangladesh, where a hilltop resort floats above a sea of cloud that fills the valleys at dawn. On clear mornings the ridgelines roll away toward Myanmar.
Stay overnight or arrive at sunrise to catch the clouds before they lift.

A hilltop park just above Bandarban town with sweeping views over the hills and river, popular for sunset and easily reached by local transport. The evening light over the valley is superb.
Go late afternoon for sunset; it gets busy with domestic visitors on weekends.

The Buddha Dhatu Jadi, or Golden Temple, is the largest Theravada Buddhist temple in Bangladesh, its gilded spires rising above a hilltop near town and reflecting the region’s strong Buddhist heritage.
Dress modestly and remove shoes; the hilltop setting is worth the climb.

The road to Chimbuk peak winds through the homelands of the Mro, Bawm and Marma peoples, with villages, markets and terraced fields offering a window into hill-tribe life very different from lowland Bangladesh.
Some areas of the Hill Tracts require permits; travel with a local guide.

The Sangu river carves through the hills below Bandarban, and boat trips lead to remote waterfalls and rapids such as Nafakhum, deep in tribal country and reached by a mix of boat and trek.
River trips to the far falls need a guide, permits and a full day or more.
Food in the Chittagong Hill Tracts is different from the Bengali plains. The Marma, Bawm, Chakma and other hill communities cook bamboo-shoot curries, meats and fish slow-cooked inside bamboo tubes (bamboo chicken is the best known), smoked and fermented flavours, and sticky rice grown on jhum hill farms. Fresh pineapple, jackfruit and bananas from the slopes are cheap and excellent.
In Bandarban town, simple restaurants serve standard Bangladeshi rice, daal, fish and chicken curries alongside hill dishes, and tea stalls are everywhere. Options thin out quickly once you leave town, so bring snacks and water for days at Nilgiri, Chimbuk or on the river. The hill resorts serve set meals, often with a view.
Bandarban is about 90 km southeast of Chittagong, roughly two and a half to three hours by bus or car, and overnight buses from Dhaka take eight to ten hours. The nearest airports are Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. Inside the district, hired jeeps known locally as chander gari carry groups to Nilachal, Chimbuk and Nilgiri, and boats run on the Sangu River. Foreigners’ access to parts of the Hill Tracts is restricted and some areas need permits or are closed, so check current rules and travel with a registered local guide for trips beyond town.
Bandarban is inexpensive, but guides, permits and jeeps add up for trips into the hills. Estimates are per person per day in USD.
Three days lets you ease into the hills, catch the Nilgiri clouds and get out on the river.
Visit the Buddha Dhatu Jadi, the Golden Temple on a hilltop outside town, then drive up to Nilachal viewpoint for sunset over the ranges.
Remove shoes at the temple and dress modestly.
Drive up to Nilgiri before dawn for the sea of clouds, then stop at Chimbuk and hill villages along the road on the way back.
Nilgiri is at its best early in the monsoon-to-winter season.
Take a boat on the Sangu River toward the waterfalls, with a guide and permits for the deeper hill country.
Check with your guide which areas are open to foreigners.
Parts of the Hill Tracts need permits and a guide; arrange these before you travel deeper in.

The famous cloud seas at Nilgiri form at dawn, so stay overnight or start very early.
Bring plenty of taka; ATMs are limited and cards are rarely accepted in the hills.
