The Museum of Belize (Gabourel Lane; the 1857 colonial jail; USD 5; Tue–Fri 9am–5pm; the jade collection — the Altun Ha jade head and the Lamanai jade mask; the colonial history rooms; the natural history section; the 19th-century jail cells converted into exhibition rooms) is the finest cultural experience in Belize City.

Fort George District (the safest and most genteel neighbourhood in Belize City; colonial mansions; the Radisson Fort George Hotel; the waterfront promenade; the Baron Bliss Lighthouse — memorial to the English nobleman who left his entire estate to Belize in 1926 after arriving too ill to come ashore) is the only area recommended for independent walking.

Altun Ha (52km north of Belize City; USD 10; the most accessible Maya site from the city; 13 structures across two plazas; the Temple of the Sun God at 16m; the jade head of the Sun God found here in 1968 — the most significant Belizean archaeological find) is the essential half-day cultural stop from Belize City.

Belize City food is most rewarding in the traditional local restaurants rather than the tourist-facing cruise ship options. Belize City to Ambergris Caye: 75 min (water taxi) or 10 min (domestic flight). To San Ignacio: 2h (bus). To Hopkins: 3h (bus + taxi). To Placencia: 3.5h (bus + road).
Most travellers give Belize City a few hours between the airport and a water taxi — used well, they are worth having. The Fort George district holds the lighthouse, the Baron Bliss memorial, and colonial-era houses; the Museum of Belize, in a former prison, covers everything from Maya jade to hurricane history in an hour. Watch the hand-cranked swing bridge open if your timing is lucky.
With a spare half-day, the Maya ruins at Altun Ha are an easy 45-minute trip — the Sun God’s jade head found there is the one on your Belikin bottle. Otherwise, the Brown Sugar terminal puts you on a water taxi to Caye Caulker or San Pedro inside 90 minutes. Keep wandering to the Fort George area; this is a port city that rewards purpose over aimlessness.
