The Split (the narrow channel dividing the island after Hurricane Hattie in 1961; the Lazy Lizard Bar on the wooden dock; Belikin beer at BZD 4; jump from the dock into the warm channel water; toucans in the mangroves beyond) is the heart of Caye Caulker social life and the defining experience of the island.
💡 The Split from 3pm to sunset (the most sociable hour in Belize; 5pm is peak when snorkel boats return; jump from the dock — it’s expected; avoid the north bank, current is stronger). Sunrise here at 6am is peaceful and entirely free.
The Caye Caulker reef snorkel (USD 25–40; the 4-site half-day circuit: the Caulker reef crest, the shark and ray feeding area, turtle grass beds with green turtles, and the West Indian manatee zone) is the finest half-day marine experience in Belize for non-divers.
💡 Book from Front Street operators the evening before (USD 25–35 including boat, guide, gear, and basic lunch; 4h; departs 9am). The West Indian manatees (up to 3.5m; feeding in seagrass 20 min from the island) are the most reliably encountered in Belize.

💡 Walk Front Street twice: 8am (fishing boats returning; I&G for breakfast at BZD 5; the quietest Caribbean island morning) and 6pm (the bars filling; the sunset over the lagoon; rum punch BZD 6). Both walks are free.
The Caye Caulker wildlife (West Indian manatees in the seagrass beds south of the Split; the keel-billed toucan — Belize’s national bird — in the northern reserve mangroves; the magnificent frigatebird colony returning at dusk; the American crocodile in the southern mangrove channels) is the finest casual wildlife on any Caribbean island.
💡 Manatee boat trip (any snorkel operator; add to any circuit for BZD 10–15; the manatees at 1–2m depth visible from the surface). Toucan watch from the Split dock at 7am: free; the birds call from the mangroves before the morning crowd arrives.
Caye Caulker is the finest budget seafood value in Belize. The I&G Restaurant (the best cheap breakfast; Johnny cake with egg and cheese BZD 5; the most famous breakfast stop on the island; also the finest rice and beans with stewed chicken at lunch for BZD 8). The Happy Lobster Restaurant (the cheapest lobster on the island in season; USD 20–25 per tail grilled with garlic butter; the most affordable Belizean lobster experience). La Cubana (the most reliable evening restaurant; the lobster in season; the conch fritters; the fried rice; USD 15–30 per meal). The Split bar rum punch (BZD 6; the Travellers brand Belize rum; the lime; the ice; the most sociable drink in Belize; consumed on the dock with your feet dangling over the channel). The fresh coconut water from any beach vendor (BZD 2; machete-opened on the spot; the most refreshing Belize drink on a hot afternoon).
The Belize Dollar fixed rate (exactly 2 BZD = 1 USD; enforced by the Central Bank; the simplest Caribbean currency arithmetic; divide any BZD price by 2 for the USD equivalent).
The Great Blue Hole day trip (USD 280–320 from Caye Caulker; 3 dives including the Blue Hole at 40m, Halfmoon Caye, and a coral reef; book on arrival in Caye Caulker; snorkelling version also available; sells out fast in peak season).
The Belizean lobster season (Caribbean spiny lobster; in season June 15–February 14; USD 3–8/lb directly from the fishing boats at Caye Caulker or Hopkins dock at 6–8am; a fraction of restaurant prices; local restaurants will cook your own purchased fish for USD 3–5 corkage).
The Gladden Spit whale shark aggregation (April–May full moon periods; the cubera snapper spawn draws whale sharks up to 12m; snorkel tours from Placencia USD 100–150; book 3 days ahead; the most extraordinary marine encounter in the Americas; plan your Belize dates around this if possible).
Belize lobster season (June 15–February 14; ordering lobster outside season is illegal and subject to fine; the close season February 15–June 14 protects the breeding population).
Belize City to San Ignacio (2h by bus), to Hopkins (3h), to Placencia (3.5h), to Ambergris Caye (75 mins by water taxi; 10 mins by domestic flight).
Mornings here start slowly on purpose. Take the half-day snorkel (Coral Gardens, the Channel, seahorses at the marina if the guide knows where to look), then claim a spot at the Split — the swimming channel that cleaves the island — for the afternoon. The Lazy Lizard’s rum punch at sunset is a ritual, not a recommendation.
The full-day trip is the island’s best value: five or six stops inside Hol Chan Marine Reserve including Shark Ray Alley, with ceviche made on the boat. Back by 4pm, shower off the salt, and find whichever beach grill has lobster on the fire — June to February, it will be most of them.
