Palm-lined beaches, a European-Caribbean village and whale season on the Samaná Peninsula
The town beach runs either side of the centre, from Punta Popy, popular with kitesurfers, to Playa Las Ballenas. The colourful Pueblo de los Pescadores, the old fishermen’s village, is now a strip of beachfront restaurants and bars.

West of town, Playa Bonita is a long, quieter beach lined with palms and small hotels. Waves can be bigger here, which makes it popular for surfing lessons.

Beyond Playa Bonita, Playa Cosón stretches for several kilometres of sand backed by coconut palms, with only a handful of resorts and beach restaurants along it.
Go by quad, motoconcho or taxi; there is little shade away from the restaurants.

Inland from the village of El Limón, a trail through forest and farmland leads to this natural monument, where the water drops into a pool you can swim in. Most visitors go on horseback with local guides, though you can also hike.
Wear shoes with grip; the trail is muddy after rain.

From January to March, humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay to mate and calve, and boat tours leave from Samaná town on the south side of the peninsula. Across the bay, Los Haitises National Park protects mangroves, caves and forested limestone islets, visited by boat.
Choose licensed whale-watching operators that follow the bay’s rules.

Las Terrenas is known for its variety: French bakeries and cafés sit alongside Dominican comedores serving la bandera (rice, beans and meat), fish cooked in coconut sauce (pescado con coco, a Samaná speciality) and fried plantains.
The Pueblo de los Pescadores and the beach roads have the most restaurants, from simple seafood grills to upscale Italian and French dining.
Samaná El Catey International Airport (AZS) is the closest airport, a short drive from town. From Santo Domingo’s Las Américas airport and the capital, the drive takes around 2.5 to 3 hours on the toll highway; buses and private transfers also run.
In town, people get around on foot, by motoconcho (motorbike taxi), taxi, rented scooter or quad. Samaná town and its whale tours are about 40 minutes away by road.
The Dominican Republic uses the peso (DOP), and US dollars are often accepted for tours and hotels.
Local comedores are much cheaper than beachfront restaurants.
Weekly apartment rentals are common and good value.
