The Samaná Peninsula juts into the Atlantic on the Dominican Republic’s northeast coast, covered in coconut palms and green hills. Its towns include Santa Bárbara de Samaná, beachy Las Terrenas and quiet Las Galeras.

From about mid-January to late March, thousands of humpback whales come to Samaná Bay to mate and give birth, making it one of the Caribbean’s best places for whale watching.

Licensed boats leave Samaná town in season. Strict rules limit how close and how long boats stay with the whales, and swimming with them is forbidden.
