The Secret Lagoon at Fludir (ISK 3,500; 45 min from Selfoss) is the original geothermal pool, with no facilities but real volcanic steam. Winter visits are extraordinary.
Keríð volcanic crater lake is best at sunset when the red and black walls turn orange. Entry costs ISK 700. The 20-minute walk around the rim is very easy.
Selfoss (1 hour from Reykjavik) works as a 2-night base covering both the Golden Circle and the South Coast. Avoids the Reykjavik hotel cost and daily driving fatigue.
