The beach that made Montego Bay: a crescent of white sand and famously clear, calm water, reef-sheltered and gentle, that drew Edwardian health tourists convinced of its curative powers. Still the town’s best-loved swimming beach, with loungers, changing rooms and a mellow, family-friendly vibe right on the Hip Strip.
💡 There’s a small entry fee that keeps it clean and well-run — arrive by mid-morning for a lounger, and the snorkelling over the offshore reef is genuinely good.
Gloucester Avenue — the Hip Strip — is MoBay’s seafront artery of bars, craft stalls, restaurants and duty-free shops, running past the town beaches. By day it’s shopping and swimming; by night it’s the town’s party spine, from jerk shacks to rum bars pumping dancehall and reggae until late.
💡 Margaritaville is the loud landmark, but wander for the local jerk and rum bars off the main drag — cheaper, tastier and more fun.
Just inland, the Great River winds through rainforest, and the classic Jamaican outing is a lazy bamboo-raft float, poled by a guide standing at the bow, past hanging vines and birdsong. Night versions light the banks with torches; day trips add river swims and a rum-punch stop.

East of town, the restored 1770s Rose Hall plantation mansion looms over the coast with a chilling legend — the ‘White Witch’ Annie Palmer, said to have murdered three husbands and haunted the halls since. Day tours cover the Georgian grandeur and the folklore; candlelit night tours lean into the ghost story.
💡 The night tour is the atmospheric one if you like a scare — the daytime version gives more of the real plantation history and the coast views.
Montego Bay serves Jamaica two ways: the resort buffets and the real thing a short walk beyond the gates. Seek out the second. The Pork Pit and roadside jerk drums smoke chicken and pork over pimento wood; escovitch fish, brown-stew chicken, curry goat and festival (sweet fried dumplings) fill the cook-shops; and the market delivers ackee, breadfruit and tropical fruit. On the Hip Strip, seafood grills and rum bars do sunset well, and a cold Red Stripe or a rum punch is never far. For dessert it’s fresh mango, gizzada tarts, or a run to the nearest patty shop. Resorts are convenient, but the best MoBay meals are had off-property.
Claim a lounger at Doctor’s Cave Beach for a morning in its famously clear, calm water — snorkel the offshore reef before the sun and the crowds peak.
Stroll Gloucester Avenue for craft stalls and duty-free, then peel off for smoky jerk and a cold Red Stripe at a local drum shack away from the tourist frontage.
Float the Great River on a bamboo raft through the rainforest, or tour Rose Hall’s plantation mansion and its White Witch legend on the coast east of town.
Sunset seafood on the strip, then let the Hip Strip’s rum bars and dancehall carry the night — MoBay after dark is a party town.
Sangster International is the island’s busiest airport — most north-coast and west trips start here, and Negril and Ocho Rios are easy onward drives.
The best food and character are just beyond the all-inclusive gates — walk the Hip Strip and the town for the real Montego Bay.
