Gjilan (Gnjilane in Serbian) is the main city of the Anamorava region in south-east Kosovo, 46km from Pristina. With about 83,000 people in the wider municipality it is Kosovo’s fourth-largest city – a busy, friendly market town that grew up around 1750 on the trade roads towards Skopje, and today is known for its café culture, its theatre and one of the country’s fiercest football rivalries.

Gjilan itself has few big-name monuments, and that is part of its appeal: you see everyday Kosovo, with almost no other tourists. It is also the best base for Novo Brdo, the ruined medieval fortress and silver-mining town 25km away, and for the lakes and villages of the Anamorava valley.

Top Sights in Gjilan

Gjilan city centre in the afternoon

City Centre & Café Culture

The centre is compact and made for walking: the main square, the park and the pedestrian streets around Mother Teresa Street fill with cafés from morning to late evening. Like everywhere in Kosovo, the macchiato is excellent and costs about a euro.

Evenings from May to September are the liveliest time, with families out for the xhiro (evening stroll).

Gjilan City Theatre

Gjilan City Theatre

Founded in 1944, the theatre is one of the most active in Kosovo, staging more than a hundred performances a year. In January the city holds Flaka e Janarit, a month-long cultural festival of theatre, music and exhibitions (11–31 January).

Performances are in Albanian; check the programme at the box office.

Novo Brdo fortress near Gjilan, Kosovo

Novo Brdo Fortress

On a hill 25km north-west of Gjilan stand the walls and towers of Novo Brdo (Novobërdë), one of the largest mining towns of medieval south-east Europe. In the 14th and 15th centuries its silver mines made it richer than most cities in the Balkans, until it fell to the Ottomans in 1455. The ruins give sweeping views over the hills.

The last stretch is a short, steep walk on a rocky path; wear sturdy shoes.

Livoq Lake near Gjilan

Livoq Lake

A reservoir just outside the city, popular for walks, picnics, cycling and summer swimming. Lakeside restaurants make it a favourite weekend spot for local families.

Take a taxi or local minibus; it is a few kilometres from the centre.

Eating & Drinking

Gjilan eats like the rest of Kosovo: grilled meats (qebapa, suxhuk and steaks), flia (layered crepe pie baked for hours), tavë kosi (lamb baked with yoghurt), peppers stuffed with cheese, and burek from the bakeries in the morning. Restaurants in the centre and around the city are good value; family-run grill houses are the local favourite.

Cafés are the centre of social life. Also look out for local honey, cheese and ajvar (roasted pepper relish) in the market and farm shops.

Getting There & Around

Buses and minibuses run frequently from Pristina bus station to Gjilan, taking about an hour and costing around €2.50. There are also direct buses from Ferizaj (about 30 minutes) and Prizren (about 2 hours). Pristina International Airport is roughly an hour away by taxi or car.

The centre is walkable. Taxis are cheap and the easiest way to reach Livoq Lake; for Novo Brdo and Llabjan, hire a taxi for a few hours or rent a car in Pristina. There is no passenger train service to Gjilan.
