The Guadalajara Metro (Lines 1, 2 and 3; MXN 9–11 per ride; Line 3 now connects the Airport to the historic centre in approximately 40 minutes with one change) covers the main tourist destinations. Uber is reliable and inexpensive (MXN 50–200 for most city journeys). The Tequila day trip: the Jose Cuervo Express train (Saturday departures from Guadalajara train station; MXN 1,200–1,800; 3.5h each way with stops; includes distillery visit, food and entertainment) is the most comprehensive experience; the ADO bus (MXN 80 return; 1.5h; from the old bus terminal on Av. Dr. R. Michel) is cheaper and more flexible. Tlaquepaque is best reached by Uber (15 min, MXN 100–150) rather than the complex city bus routing.
Oct–May is the dry season and ideal (18–28°C). The International Film Festival (March) and Dia de los Muertos (November) are the top cultural events. Jun–Sep brings afternoon rains; the tequila agave fields are most lush. December is festive with posadas and the Christmas market at the Cathedral.
Guadalajara is among Mexico’s most affordable major cities. The torta ahogada (MXN 60), the birria taco (MXN 25), the Hospicio Cañas murals (MXN 50) and the Sunday charreada (MXN 100) give the most distinctively tapatio experiences at almost no cost. Per person per day.

Order poco picante for your first torta ahogada — the drowned sandwich in chilli broth can be very hot. Birrería Las 9 Esquinas is the best.
The Hospicio Cabañas UNESCO murals by José Clemente Orozco are the finest in Mexico. English tours run Tuesday and Thursday at 10am.
The Jose Cuervo Express Saturday train from Guadalajara to Tequila town (2.5 hours) includes distillery tours and tastings. Book online.
The Plaza de los Mariachis fills at 9pm on weekends. Hire a trio for 200–300 MXN per song and negotiate the price before they start.
Charreada (Mexican rodeo) runs Sundays at a Jalisco lienzo. The Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso schedule is online. Arrive 30 minutes early.
Browse Tlaquepaque craft shops first — prices drop significantly at 4pm when dealers want to close sales before end of day.
