Camel Trek & Sunset in the Dunes

The Erg Chebbi camel trek (the most celebrated single Moroccan tourist experience: the dromedary camel caravan from the Merzouga village edge into the Erg Chebbi dune sea; the camels are guided by a Berber cameleer on foot; 1–2h to the overnight camp at the heart of the dunes): the sunset approach (leave the village at 4pm in winter or 5:30pm in summer; arriving at the dune crest above the overnight camp exactly as the sun touches the horizon; the most specifically Saharan single visual: the dune shadow advancing across the orange sand as the sun drops; the camel silhouette against the sunset sky; the most reproduced single Morocco travel photograph). The Erg Chebbi dunes (the 150m-high dune crests; the most impressive accessible dune formation in the Sahara without a multi-day crossing; the dune walking (the climb to the highest crest above the overnight camp is 45–60 min from the base; the view from the crest over the full 22km dune sea (the Algerian border is 40km east) is the most complete accessible Saharan panorama in Morocco)).

💡 Camel trek to the dunes at sunset (from MAD 200/hour; the Erg Chebbi dune field; the dunes reach 150m; the finest sand dune landscape in Morocco; the sunset colours the dunes amber then red then deep orange in the hour before dark; the camel-mounted silhouette is the defining image of Merzouga. No motorised vehicles are permitted within the dune field after 6pm.

The Overnight Desert Camp & Stargazing

The overnight Berber desert camp (the tented camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes; MAD 400–2,000 pp including dinner, breakfast, the sunset camel trek, and the sunrise camel return; the widest quality range of any accommodation type in Morocco — read reviews carefully and choose a camp with a minimum 4.5 rating): the camp dinner (the Berber camp dinner: the harira soup, the lamb tagine cooked on the camp fire, the couscous, the mint tea, and the dates — the most specifically Saharan single meal experience; dinner by firelight in the dunes with the stars appearing overhead), the gnawa music (the camp musician performs the traditional Tamazight and gnawa songs around the camp fire after dinner; the most specifically desert-Moroccan single evening), and the Saharan night sky (the most extraordinary free natural spectacle in Morocco: from midnight to 5am the Erg Chebbi sky has the lowest light pollution in the country; the Milky Way is overhead from 11pm from October to April; a minimum 0°C sleeping bag is essential for October–March).

💡 The overnight desert camp (MAD 400–800/person including dinner, camp, and breakfast; the fixed camps in the Erg Chebbi dune field; the Berber tent sleeping under the Milky Way; the stargazing (the Sahara at the Merzouga latitude has zero light pollution; the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye year-round; a telescope hire adds MAD 100). The drumming around the campfire is a Berber hospitality tradition.

The Sunrise on the Dunes & the Dune Walk

The Erg Chebbi sunrise (the most dramatic free natural event in Morocco: wake at 5:30am in December (4:30am in June) and climb the dune crest above the overnight camp (45–60 min ascent in the dark; bring a head torch; the sand is firm and cool before sunrise); the moment the sun clears the eastern horizon the Erg Chebbi turns simultaneously orange on the east face and purple in the west-face shadow; the 30 min immediately after sunrise (the golden hour of the Sahara) is the most dramatically lit single landscape moment in North Africa; the dune crest in the post-sunrise light with the overnight camp tiny below in the dune valley and the Moroccan desert stretching to Algeria in the east is the most complete and the most specifically Saharan single experience in this guide) and the independent dune walk (the Erg Chebbi base is freely accessible on foot from the village: the dune crests nearest to the village (30–45 min walk from the nearest Merzouga guesthouses) give the sunset and sunrise experience without a camel trek or overnight camp fee; the most affordable Saharan dune experience at any price is simply to walk to the base of the dunes at sunset with a bottle of water).

💡 The dune sunrise (free with overnight camp; wake at 5:30am; the dune crest at 6am; the finest sunrise in the Sahara; the light turns the dunes pink then gold as the sun clears the Algerian border ridge; the cool morning air is the best time for sand boarding (board hire MAD 50; the 150m slope is the finest in North Africa).

Khamlia Village & Gnawa Music

Khamlia village (the small oasis village 8km south of Merzouga; the most specifically Gnawa desert settlement accessible from any Moroccan desert destination: the village was founded in the 18th century by enslaved sub-Saharan Africans brought to Morocco from Mali, Senegal, and Sudan by the caravan trade; the descendants of those enslaved people maintain the purest surviving gnawa music tradition in Morocco (purer than the Essaouira festival scene; the Khamlia gnawa perform for their own community and for occasional visitors): the informal gnawa concert at the village community centre (the most authentic gnawa music experience in Morocco; tip MAD 50–100 pp; arranged by the Khamlia community on an informal basis; ask your Merzouga guesthouse to contact the Khamlia musicians in advance), the date palm oasis walk (free; the most specifically desert-oasis single landscape in the Merzouga area; the 1,000-year-old irrigation channels (the khettara) that still water the palm gardens), and the desert quad-biking (the dunes surrounding Khamlia; MAD 200–400/h; the most physically active desert activity accessible from Merzouga)

💡 Khamlia village (7km from Merzouga; the finest Gnawa music village in the Sahara; the descendants of sub-Saharan African slaves brought to Morocco 400 years ago still play the traditional Gnawa music; the free live performances at the village centre; MAD 50 tip is the custom. The local market at Rissani (17km; Tuesday and Thursday and Sunday; the finest Saharan market in Morocco; the date varieties stall).

Tips for Merzouga

🍪

Camel trek departure: 4pm sunset or 4:30am sunrise — these are the finest Erg Chebbi hours

The 90-minute camel trek into Erg Chebbi is best at 4pm (sunset from camp) or 4:30am departure (sunrise from the highest dune). Both experiences are equally extraordinary.

🏻

Book a camp 5–7km into the dunes — not the edge camps 500m from the road

Confirm the camp’s distance from the road before booking. Edge camps (500m from the Merzouga road) have generators and light pollution. Camps 5–7km in provide genuine desert darkness.

💰

Cash only in the desert — bring Moroccan Dirhams (MAD) from your last city

Merzouga has no functioning ATMs. Bring sufficient MAD from Fes, Marrakech, or Erfoud. Card payments are not accepted at any desert camp or camel operator.

Cover up — UV index 10+ all year; Saharan wind carries abrasive sand particles

The Saharan sun reaches UV 12 (extreme) in summer. The afternoon Chebbi wind carries fine abrasive sand. Wear long sleeves, wrap a scarf around your face, and wear sunglasses always.

🌎

Download offline maps before leaving Fes or Marrakech — no 4G in the deep dunes

Mobile signal disappears 3km into the dunes. Download Maps.me with Morocco offline tiles in your last city — GPS still works without signal; the map tiles do not update without data.

🎹

Visit Khamlia village for Gnawa music — the finest 20-minute free experience near Merzouga

Khamlia village (5km from Merzouga; any camp driver will take you; free visit) has a Gnawa community who perform their trance music in a single-room venue for visiting travellers.
