Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda (3km south of Hpa-An; free; the Buddhist pagoda built on a single vertical limestone pinnacle rising 50m from a lake; the reflection of the pinnacle in the still water; the most photogenic single image in Hpa-An; accessible by the bridge to the pagoda base or viewable from the lake shore; the sunrise reflection of the pinnacle in the morning lake creates the most extraordinary Hpa-An photography opportunity; the monks resident on the pinnacle top) is the most distinctive Myanmar religious site outside the Shwedagon.

Kaw Goon Cave (4km from Hpa-An; USD 1; the 7th-century cave with the largest collection of Buddhist votive tablets in Myanmar — the thousands of tiny clay Buddha votive plaques pressed into the cave walls dating from the Mon kingdom; the most historically significant cave in the Hpa-An region) and the Thanlwin River sunset (the Hpa-An waterfront; the river at 6pm; the limestone peaks visible in all directions; the boat traffic on the river; the daily open-air river food market visible from the bank at dusk) are the two best complementary experiences after the main cave and mountain.

Hpa-An has a simple but entirely adequate food scene for the small city that it is. The Peace Restaurant (the most reliable; near the waterfront; the Mon fish curry — the distinctive cuisine of Kayin State; the rich fish paste sauces of the Mon people; USD 3–8) and the Lucky Garden Beer Station (the most sociable evening spot; the cold Myanmar Beer; the basic food; the Thanlwin River visible through the open side; the most atmospheric budget evening in Hpa-An) are the two essential stops. The Hpa-An morning market (the Mon street food; the mohinga in the Mon style; the savoury sticky rice; the most authentic Hpa-An breakfast at any of the market stalls from 6am; MMK 500–1,500 per dish) is the finest morning food experience.
Hpa-An receives a fraction of the visitors of Bagan, Inle Lake, or Yangon despite possessing the most dramatic landscape in Myanmar.

JJ Express bus from Yangon Aung Mingalar to Hpa-An (4 hours; USD 8–12; departs 7am and 8:30am) is the most comfortable connection. Return buses depart Hpa-An in the afternoon.
Kyauk Ka Lat at dawn (limestone pinnacle reflected in still lake; pagoda at the summit; 15-minute climb; free entry) is the finest landscape in southern Myanmar. Most photogenic before 8am.
