Lima is simultaneously the least visited major capital in South America and the finest dining city on the continent — a Pacific coastal city of 11 million, grey with the year-round garúa (coastal fog) from June to November, but with a food scene (Central at No.1 in Latin America; Maido, La Mar, Astrid y Gastón) that draws the global culinary world. The Miraflores Malecón — the clifftop promenade above the Pacific surf — is the finest urban seafront walk in South America.

The Larco Museum holds the finest collection of pre-Columbian gold and ceramics in Latin America, housed in an 18th-century viceregal mansion in Pueblo Libre. Barranco, the bohemian neighbourhood south of Miraflores, has the finest cafe, gallery, and bar scene in Lima. The ceviche at La Mar (opens 10am; the lunch queue begins at 9:30am) is the finest single dish in Peru.

Miraflores Malécon & the Pacific

The Miraflores Malecón is the 5km clifftop promenade above the Pacific surf — the finest urban seafront walk in South America, with the Lima coastline stretching south to Chorrillos and north to Callao. Paragliders launch from the Larcomar cliff at 5pm daily; the Pacific view is only achievable from the cliff edge.

💡 La Mar (the finest ceviche restaurant in Peru; Miraflores; opens 10am) has walk-in lunch from noon — arrive at 9:30am to secure a table. The ceviche clásico and the tiradito are the two non-negotiable orders.

💡 The Larco Museum at 9am (S/40; Pueblo Libre; Uber S/12 from Miraflores) gives you the gold vault and the Mochica gallery to yourself before the tour groups arrive by bus at 10:30am.

Ceviche & Lima’s Food Culture

Lima’s food culture is the finest in South America — the product of Andean, Spanish, Japanese (Nikkei), and Chinese (chifa) culinary traditions converging in a single city. The ceviche clásico (sea bass; leche de tigre; cancha; choclo), the causa (potato terrine), and the lomo saltado (Chinese-Peruvian stir-fried beef) are the three essential dishes.

💡 The Lima Historic Centre (30 min by Metropolitano; the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral, and the San Francisco catacombs at S/20) has the finest Spanish colonial architecture in the Americas.

Eating & Drinking

Lima has the most sophisticated and most diverse food scene in South America. The tasting menu fine dining (the Central of Virgílio Martínez — the world’s finest tasting menu; PEN 700–900 pp; book 2–4 months ahead at centralrestaurante.pe; the 17-course ecosystems menu from 0m ocean floor to 4,000m highland; the Maido of Mitsuharu Tsumura — the Nikkei tasting menu; PEN 500–700 pp; the Astrid y Gastón in San Isidro — the Gastón Acurio flagship; the menu of Peruvian regional ingredients), the mid-range neighbourhood restaurants (the La Mar cevichería in Miraflores — Gastón Acurio’s casual ceviche institution; open noon–5pm only; PEN 60–150 pp; no reservations; arrive at noon opening), and the street food (the empanadas from the corner bakery; the anticuchos — the beef heart skewer with the aji panca chilli sauce; PEN 5–10 from the street grill carts in Miraflores and Barranco from 6pm; the most specifically Lima street food; the jugo de naranja — the freshly squeezed orange juice; PEN 5 from any Lima juice cart) give Lima a food hierarchy from street stall to world’s best restaurant within the same city blocks.

Getting Around

Uber (the most reliable and safest Lima transport; always use the app — never hail unlicensed taxis; PEN 8–30 for most Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro journeys; PEN 25–50 to the historic centre or Pueblo Libre; PEN 35–60 from the airport) is the primary Lima visitor transport. Cabify (the Spanish ride-hailing competitor; similar coverage; sometimes cheaper than Uber in peak hour) is the supplement. The Metropolitano BRT (the dedicated-lane rapid bus; PEN 2.50; connects the Javier Prado stop — walkable from Miraflores — to the central Lima stops in 20 min; the most reliable public transport in Lima; runs 5am–10pm). Walking within Miraflores and Barranco (both districts are safe and pleasant on foot within their own boundaries; the Malécon connects them with a 25-min clifftop walk).
